I'm in complete daydream mode cuz it is sooooooooooo dead here at work!!
DH and i have *slowly* started to talk about getting a car in the new year... Whether it's thru leasing or buying, we're not sure yet, although i'm starting to lean toward buying. I'm thinking we might buy in NH (no state tax!) and possibly leave the car registered/titled there. Is that wrong/illegal?
Any advice on leasing vs buying? Any advice on what a pain it is to have a car in NYC?
TIA!!
Re: Car advice plz!!
My DH & I are going through the same situation right now. Our lease is up on our 2005 Chevy Equinox and we started looking at the SUV's we like. We have a 16 month old baby girl and are planning to have another baby(God willing) by next year, so we need more room.
Chevy and GMC basically want you to buy since they got screwed financially with their leases. The prices are INSANE!!! We are looking at the Chevy Traverse and the GMC Acadia. Their lease options are crazy, you would be paying over $500/mth even with putting $$ down. Told you, crazy. We are also looking at the Honda Pilot. Also a lot of money.
We really don't know what to do. So right now I am doing a month to month until we find something we can afford.
Good luck to you.
I've been really toying with this idea as well. I feel like we spend so much money on rental cars, flights, train tickets that we would be spending less with our own.
From what I've talked with other people about - registering a car elsewhere and then having it here would be a problem if you get parking tickets, etc. But I haven't really looked into it. Supposedly the insurance for cars is crazy expensive here in the city. anyone have opinions on this?
Also - the pain of having a car - that i can imagine - would be with parking. Since your in BK, it would be the hassel of parking your car, moving it if needed for street cleanings, forgetting where you parked your car (our neighbors have this problem!) and also the possible break-in, car damage risks.
good luck and let me know if you find any more about it!
Having a car in the city is really hard. We lived in Brooklyn for 5 years and had our car for the whole time. You just have to be really careful about the alternate sides parking rules (we got a lot of tickets at first) and you have to know that your car will probably be broken into over and over again (we averaged about 2 times a year). Also, our car was towed whenever our street was closed down with little or no notice for city funerals and movie shoots. Not fun!
With that being said, I loved having my car. It was great to be able to jump in and visit friends all over Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island and not have to map out the public transit route. Also, I loved being able to go grocery shopping and buy more then 4 bags of groceries. The insurance is expensive and you should totally get full glass coverage. But if you can get a good low interest rate on a car loan and have a decent amount of money to put down, then you might be able to have a pretty low payment.
We got a great deal on a new Nissan Altima after my car was stolen from one of the schools I work at on Staten Island. There is a good tax rebate that you can get if your purchase before January and we got an additional $2500 back from the dealer.
GL!
To register a car you need an address. So unless you have family there you're out of luck.
We bough the IL's old car (they leased and then we bought the car at the end the lease.) It if 4 years old with 15,000 miles on it. It has always been in a garage so it is in great shape. I don't love the car (PT cruiser) but it has been a huge help during this pregnancy since I get sick on the subway.
Financially the most sensible thing to do is buy a used car and drive it into the ground. Of course used cars are tricky but you might be able to get a warranty if you buy from a dealer. The other thing you might want to consider is zip car. My friend does it and it works perfectly for her.
DH and I had a car for about a year when we used to live in Brooklyn. It was nice to have a car for the weekends, but otherwise, it was a PITA. We parked on the street, so we had to move it every day and were constantly getting parking tickets. Plus insurance is sooooo expensive (and gas, too). We finally sold the car and feel so free without one. We just use public transportation and taxis and rent a car when necessary.
My advice would be to rent a car for a week and see if it's worth the hassle with traffic, parking, and paying for gas. Good luck!
We have since moved to Westchester so we have a driveway parking isn't an issue. We decided to get a new more reliable car that we'll "grow" into. We have a two week old GMC Acadia and we LOVE it. I can't say enough about it.
