I really have no excuse for the beginning of last week, but my grandfather died on Thursday and it was pretty unexpected (as much as it can be for an 89 yr old man) so the following 4 days were just a whirlwind of family and tears and running around. Hearing about him from other people was like meeting a different man - as he aged, my grandfather has become increasingly dependent on us, but back in the day he was very active in his church and was even given an award from the diocese of Buffalo for all his volunteer work.?
Also, something Meg might be interested in - he was a WWII vet and was given the Silver Star and the Purple Heart. We always thought the Purple Heart was such a huge deal, because my grandpa never talked about these things. I even remember taking the medals to school when I was 10 or 11. Well, we never knew but "The?Silver Star?is the third highest military decoration that can be awarded to a member of any branch of the United States Armed Force.?The Silver Star is awarded for gallantry in action against an enemy of the US (wikipedia)?"?So we found the citation about why he received the medal. And also telegraphs updating his family on his condition while he was injured. It was so amazing.?
So sorry I've written a book, but I hope to be around more this week. ?
Re: Please excuse my absence...
I'm so sorry for your loss and my prayers are with you and your family. What a wonderful blessing to have uncovered so much more of his history - hopefully having that will help you all heal.
