Stained concrete floors

Does anyone have these floors?  What do you think?  How long did it take from original flooring removal until your furniture could go back.  Could your pets stay in the house (another room)?

Do you still have wood or tile flooring, if so how does the lip work?  I really don't want to rip out the wood floors we have or the tile but I don't want a noticable gap either.

It seems for the removal of flooring and staining it will be about $3/sq ft.  Does that sound right?

Re: Stained concrete floors

  • We have stained concrete throughout the first floor of our home and I love it.  It was done prior to our moving in (new construction), so I can't tell you much about the length of time it needed to be complete.  My sister had it done on her first floor and it was about 7-8 days until they moved furniture back in, but they also had some scoring done.  For most of the process they could stay in the house, but the day they actually stained they left and took their dogs with them and stayed with family for one night.  The staining smell is very strong and I would not recommend leaving your pets in the home.

We don't have any transitions in our home, but I imagine a simple piece of quarter round for the wood floors and something similar for the tile would be all you would need to ease the difference in floors.

I think $3/foot is a good price if they are removing the existing floors, patching anything underneath and staining/sealing/waxing the floors.  One thing you should check on is how they handle existing baseboards.  These are easily ruined by the stain, so I would want to know how they plan to protect yours.

All of that said, I absolutely love our floors.  They are easy to take care of and keep the house nice and cool.  I think all of our houses will have the first floor as concrete from now on!

  • You might consider an alternative in the kitchen as it can be very painful to stand for long periods of time, esp. barefoot.
  • We had them at our loft and it seemed like I could never get them cleaned. You will have to move the furniture a lot so you can clean behind there.
