There's a slug in my salad

Well, there could have been...

DH and I have a little garden in our backyard. One of the things we are growing is lettuce - we have a TON of it.  So, Sunday we decided to cut some and make a salad with it.

You have to cut each individual leaf, because there BUGS in a garden and if you cut a chunk at a time, you'd scoop up a lot of them.  And you'd probably eat some weeds in the process.  So, DH spends 20 minutes cutting the leaves so we can bring them in and wash them and eat them....

I take some out and put them in a colander to wash them, but then I realize that they'd be better draining in the colander so I take them out....

And DH looks into the empty colandar and there's a SLUG sitting in it, like "Oh, hi there.  I just wanted some salad too, thanks".  Um. Eew.

I am such a city slicker.  I made DH SCRUB every individual leaf before I would eat it.  And we are NOT planting lettuce next year.

  • Ick!  I don't think I would've been able to eat it

That's awesome though, what else are you growing?

  • haha - i'm sorry, not really funny, but kind of is. We've been growing a bunch of stuff too! like herbs, lettuces (which aren't doing very well sadly), tomatoes, and one hot pepper plant for DH.

  • Ewww, real gross. But I wouldn't stop planting my veges...just be extra careful when you wash and I would also put the lettuce leaves in a large container of water with about a teaspoon of vinegar. That brings the little critters out. I admire you guys for planting veges in your backyard...maybe I will do that too once we clean our yard. Hmmm.

I would have had a hard time getting the image of the slug out of my mind long enough to eat.  Good for you!

  • thanks for the tip, lawby.  we will try that.

We are growing tomatoes, basil, carrots, lettuce, corn (yes, we have corn stalks!) and squash.  Everything is doing really well!

  • That is sooooo disgusting. I absolutely skeeve slugs and worms and anything slimy....gross! But, it wouldn't stop me from growing a garden. That's one thing I look forward to doing once we buy a bigger house with more property...is having my very own veggie garden!

YES!! I'd rather bugs than icky pesticides from store bought veggies.

My dad grew all our veggies when we were growing up, I really miss having a fresh greens, etc. Farmer's Market will have to do!
