72-Year-Old Woman Trying to Have Baby

(July 14) - The last thing on the mind of a 72-year-old woman just might be having a baby. But that's not the case for Jenny Brown. The British septuagenarian who lives in London is desperately trying to get pregnant, according to The Daily Mail.

So far, Brown has spent nearly $50,000 on six in vitro fertilization treatments in the United States and Italy, and has been unsuccessful in getting pregnant. She says she's ready to spend more and will travel to IVF clinics around the world that offer treatment to women her age.

Brown said she waited until later in life to try to conceive because she had been busy pursuing various academic degrees when she was younger.

"My studies meant that children kept getting delayed. The right time finally came in my early fifties and since then I've been attempting -- and failing -- with IVF," she told The Daily Mail.

If Brown does have a child, she would become the oldest mother in the world. Critics have called her irresponsible for trying to get pregnant at her age.

"She is at high risk of preeclampsia, miscarriage and diabetes. She also won't have enough energy to care for the child properly and is ultimately being irresponsible," one critic said.

But Brown, who's never married or been in a serious relationship, said she's ready for the challenge.

"I know it'll be hard work. It'll change my life completely and I'm prepared for that," she said.

Brown is appealing for women aged between 20 and 35 to come forward as possible egg donors.

"It's important that I carry the baby myself because I believe that even if I get pregnant with a donated egg I will pass genetic material on to the baby while I carry it in the womb," Brown said.

  • LISA!!!!!!! I'VE MISSED YOU!!!!!  Party!!!

  • Ok, now I read the article.

Yeah, I think she is being a little unreasonable believing that she'll be able to have a baby at her age. Ignoring whether or not she even should, ethically, I think that physically it's just too much. I don't know about that "passing genetic material to the baby" thing. I don't think that's right, but I could be wrong I guess.

I feel sorry for her and he desire to have a baby, but I think she should let this one go. That's the trade off for spending your reproductive years doing other things. It's not fair, but its reality.

Personally I'd rather focus on having a baby now and be working towards "various academic degrees" when I'm 72. But clearly I have different priorities.

  • This is so wrong on so many levels. One the danger of the actual pregnancy. Two the fact of somebody that age trying to keep up with a baby and a toddler. Then the fact that she'll be dead before the kid graduates high school. Just so wrong.
  • Miss you guys too. I still lurk but it's so slow here. You all should come and play with us on the TIP board I promise it's not all doom and gloom. I know you all will have a blast there.

As for the artical. How ever the Dr is that is giving her IVF treatment should lose their license for ever agreeing to this. This woman is batshitz crazy for thinking she should have a child at 72 years old.

Shoot she'll be dead before it gets out of elementary school

  • I guess since it's her body and her money, she can do whatever she wants.

That being said, I feel bad for the kid she (might) eventually have.  I had Sarah a month before I turned 39 and am exhausted by her...I absolutely CANNOT imagine doing this at 72!

I have a friend who had her child at 52.  She was never married before and went to her 30 year high school reunion and re-connected with an old friend (who had also never married or had kids).  They got married a year or so later and started to try and have a child.  She went through several IVF's and finally had a baby boy 6 weeks early who wound up being in the NICU for 6 weeks.  She's absolutely exhausted chasing after her now (healthy) 2 year old.

  • HI LISA!! what have you been up to??

I think she is being totally selfish and irresponsible. Like pp said already, she wont have the energy, and she wont be there to see the kid grow up, or possibly raise it through childhood! Ridiculous. Like Melinda said, she should have maybe focused on this earlier than her 50's...

Oh just working and changing diapers. The usual :)

  • I definitely agree- she is being totally irresponsible! #1- it could have severe consequences on her health, or might even kill her. #2- the poor kid will have a mother who is old enough to be its great-grandmother... I had a friend in HS whose parents were in their mid-70s, and it really sucked for her. They couldn't participate in activities with her, and she had a lot of psychological issues that stemmed from having parents who were 30 years older than her friends' parents.  The doctors should not be taking money to give this woman that hope or the possibility of having a child.

I was trying to be optimistic. You're being realistic.

    It's malpractice IMO.

  • Omg. That is horrible. So sad.

How is it that clinic didn't ask for ID?! These people are really giving IF a bad name.

Lol. Omg Brandy, you're so right.

    Word.

I just don't understand where people get the idea that they deserve to get everything that they want. Life just doesn't work that way, and if your gonna pass on the opportunity when you had the chance, that's your own damn fault.

  • INCREDIBLY selfish! What happens to the child once she dies? Most people live into their 80's, right? So she will most likely die before the child even becomes a teen...possibly before the baby's 10th birthday. But she is up to the "challenge"? WHO is allowing this woman to do IVF?
