Do you make your own spaghetti sauce?

I want to make a homemade spaghetti sauce (using canned tomatoes). Does anybody have a recipe? I tried all recipe's and found one but I thought I would get your opinion too.

I have also heard to through a dash of sugar in with it. Does anybody do that?

Re: Do you make your own spaghetti sauce?

  • Yes, but I don't have a recipe for it.  I just throw a bunch of stuff together, and add broccoli to mine instead of meat.

    I have never added sugar.

  • Do you use flavored diced tomatoes or regular? And one person told me to also use tomato puree and tomato sauce?

  • My mom does, but I've never taken up the challenge.
  • I used to when I had more time and I believe the recipe I used did call for a dash of sugar. Since, I get home later now, I have been using TJ's spaghetti sauce and to me it tastes homemade. I love it.

Let me dig up the recipe for it.

  • I used flavored tomatoes at times.  I used diced and stewed and sauce and paste.

  • mmmmm spaghetti.
  • I usually use a can of diced tomatoes, a small can of tomato paste and a small can of tomato sauce.  Then I throw in some dried herbs like basil, oregano, pepper and garlic salt. I usually put in a can of water- using the small tomato paste can. Bring it to a boil for about 5-10 minutes then its good to go :)  Its mostly just eyeballed- no real "recipe" for it.

I have friends who like to add sugar to theirs- but I don't like the sweetness of it.

  • I've used a recipe by Rachel Ray which was pretty easy.  I don't remember sugar but I vaguely remember adding nutmeg...it's been a LONG time.  Ditto on the TJ's brand - it's the only jarred sauce I like!

I bought another brand (gasp) and it was horrible, sooo bland! I will never do that again.

  • Its something I've said I would always try but never felt up for the effort so I'm no help...GL!
  • I looove my spaghetti sauce (same sauce I used for the gtg on my lasagna).

I'll give it to you  Saturday.  : )

What, you're making me spaghetti sauce? What?

    :P

  • Ok, so I can't find the recipe on my google reader. But basically almost all the recipes I have seen and like the other girls have mentioned above it includes diced tomatoes, tomato paste, and tomato sauce and spices.

I like to make mine with less tomato paste as I am not big of a fan of it. Sometimes, I don't put it at in at all. I like to cook some onion, garlic and butter in the bottom of the saucepan for a little bit and then add the rest of the ingredients. I try to let it simmer as long as possible. Some recipes I have seen they say to let it simmer for 2 hours. I don't have that much time normally.  15 minutes is normally good enough.

    HTH!

  • This post is starting to make me hungry.

Robyn, do you think the more you make, the more time it would need to simmer?
  • Ummm, nope. Just takes a little bit longer to come to a simmer.

  • Try a dash of baking soda instead of sugar, it "eats" up some of the tomato acid making it taste sweeter without sugar...
  • I dont make my own sauce, Im not that creative in the kitchen, but I do add sugar to DH's sauce b/c he likes it sweet - me, yuck!
  • H makes his own, but he doesn't really use recipes for anything.  I do know for sure that he has never added sugar to it though.
  • I make my own, matter of fact I made spaghetti last night!  I don't use a recipe, so I can't give you exact amounts, it's one of those by taste type things.

Meat (1 lb) I use ground beef, or turkey or sometimes 1/2 lb of italian sausage 1/2 lb of ground meat

    1/2 big onion finely diced

    1 tbs of basil (about)

     1tbs of oregano (about)

    1 tbs of olive oil

    salt and season salt

    pinch of sugar

2 large cloves of garlic (pressed or finely chopped)

1 big can of crushed tomatoes

    1 can of diced tomatoes

I sweat the onions in the olive oil, then add the oregano and basil.  I add the meat and season it with season salt to taste, and let it brown up.  Then I add the canned tomatoes and garlic.  If it's too acidic I add a pinch of sugar, and sometimes additional salt.  Then I just let it simmer for however long it takes for the pasta to boil.

This makes a big batch, you could probably freeze half unless you like to eat spaghetti for a couple of days!

  • uuggh I'm so hungry now.
  • I'm really late to the game with this, but here's what I do.

    2 cans tomato past

couple fresh tomatos (you can sub a can of chopped or diced tomatos though)

    1 zucchini, shredded

    basil

    oregano

    fresh garlic, minced

    salt & pepper

Throw everything together in a pot, simmer until hot throughout. You can freeze the extras.
