We are thinking of getting a freezer in the near future. I am trying to decide what size and type to get. DH and I have different ideas on what is large enough, I think 12 cubic ft is fine, he thinks 7 cubic ft is enough. If you have one do you have -
Upright or chest?
Size?
Brand?
Anything you wish you could change? (bigger, smaller, upright vs. chest)
Where do you keep it? Ours will either go in the little room off the kitchen or the basement.
Re: Freezers
We have an extra refrigerator/freezer on our first floor (one floor below the kitchen). I love the extra storage, especially for buying bulk items.
My parents have an extra upright freezer that they keep in the basement. They like it but now they wish they could have a refrigerator too, which is one reason why we just kept our old one to have storage space for both.
My parents have an extra refrigerator/freezer that they keep in their garage and my mom swears she doesn't know what she did before she had one (they've had it for a few years now). It works out fabulously for buying in bulk (especially meats), keeping drinks cool (rather than filling the kitchen fridge with cases of bottled water, soda, juice, etc., she keeps them in the garage fridge), and when they're hosting parties (which they do frequently), she fills both fridges/freezers with things that she's prepared. She says it just makes life easier.
DH and I were debating either a chest freezer or another fridge/freezer for our house, and from what I've observed with my parents, ILs, and grandparents (who all have second fridge/freezers in their homes), the fridge component is equally useful, so we're opting for that over a freezer.
... every single day of forever.
Upright or chest? Chest
Size? 7.2 cu ft
Brand? Magic Chef from Home Depot
Anything you wish you could change? Nothing I can think of.
Where do you keep it? We keep our in the mechanics room in our basement. We got ours last Decemeber and thus far I have no complaints with it at all. Its probably only about a third of the way full at the moment and it still has quite a few things in it . . a 20 lbs turkey, 2 roast, numerous packages of venson . . and lots of other things. At first I thought I'd need something bigger but I am really happy with the size we got. For us I don't know if I'd be able to fill something bigger . . even with the breast milk storage I plan to use it for in the coming months.
My parents have chest freezer that they hate because stuff gets "lost" in the bottom so easily. They are going to get an upright probably this week. I always say they bigger the better! My parents keep theirs in the basement but I recommend putting it near your kitchen if at all possible...seems logical! Good Luck!
Upright or chest? Chest
Size? 5 cu. feet
Brand? Kenmore
Anything you wish you could change? (bigger, smaller, upright vs. chest)
We like it, however we just bought it a month ago. I think it is a good size since it is just the 2 of us. We would've liked an upright, but they were a lot more expensive!
Where do you keep it? Ours will either go in the little room off the kitchen or the basement.
We keep it in our garage.
And upright is great for organizing, but you can definitely put more in a chest one. My mom had both and when we bought our house 7 years ago, my mom gave us her chest freezer. When we moved to TX we left that one with the house and bought a new chest one for TX. It's 7 cubic foot, we bought at Sears. We definintely would like a larger one once we get into a bigger house.
My mom kept her freezers in the laundry ad we did in the first house. The one we currently have is in the kitchen... really no where else to put it here. But when we buy, we will probably put it in the garage. They don't have basements, otherwise we'd most likely put it there.
