DH and I are from NJ and are planning a short getaway to celebrate our anniversary. We are going to Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow, etc. and were planning on 1 night but I just wanted to ask on a local board if that area was a 1-night-worthy or 2-night-worthy trip. DH & I aren't really hiking/park people, we were planning on mostly touring mansions & historical buildings, going out to a nice dinner, and maybe catching up on some sleep on our 1st night in a year without DD! Any suggestions would be appreciated :-)
TIA!
Re: Tarrytown area?
Depending on what you choose to do, you could easily spend two full days. You should definitely go to Kykuit, (Rockefeller Mansion) -the best of the bunch. Lyndhurst is also amazing. You might also like to go to Stone Barns-- a working farm that is still owned by the Rockefellers and if you're looking to splash on an AWESOME dinner, have dinner there at Blue Hill at Stone Barns. Alternatively, you could stay at The Castle at Tarrytown, with its beautiful grounds, and gorgeous outdoor pool. YOu could spend one day touring, and another relaxing at the pool. And have dinner at Equus, the restaurant at THe Castle, another TOp NOTCH restaurant.
If your looking for something more casual, have lunch or dinner at The Striped Bass, on the Hudson River in Tarrytown, seafood restaurant with great location right on the river.
For a beautiful view of the hudson, without a major hike, go to the Rockwood Hall section of Rockefeller Preserve (a state park) it is the grounds of a former Rockefeller mansion with a stunning view of the Hudson, and the stone retaining wall remains.
(Henry Hudson Parkway north into Saw Mill River Parkway north; get off at the exit for Hawthorn; turn left at the signal light onto Route 9A north; drive to the first exit, on the left, the one for Route 117 west; turn left at the light; follow the road to its end (for Rockwood); keep driving straight; the road will dead end right at the guard rail blocking further travel for the cars. Park. The entrance trail begins behind the guard rail.)
