Menu Help

I'm throwing a small and casual GTG on Saturday for DH's birthday. He wants to grill a couple of different kinds of pizzas to make it simple, so I'm trying to come up with some goods apps and side dishes to go with.

Pizza wise, we'll probably do a white spinach pizza, bbq chicken, veggie, and hawaiian. Side dishes so far that I was thinking were a tortellini pasta salad as well as a spinach salad with strawberries, bluberries, pineapple, pecans, etc - a spin off of Panera's poppyseed strawberry salad.

None of this is really heavy and since it is a dinner, any other good thoughs of sides or apps for when people come?

Thanks!

Re: Menu Help

  • Caprese Pasta Salad?

    Or just caprese salad

    Panzanella Salad?

Or are you doing dessert? I would think you had enough apps/snacky things, if you want a dessert.

A fruit pizza might be tasty....

  • If you wanted some quick appetizer food (if you're planning to have the salads with the pizza) you could always pick up some these by Pillsbury.  We've had the spinach and cheese ones before and they weren't bad and they now have the bread bowl bites in spinach and artichoke.

This dip recipe has become a staple for my parties because its been such a big hit.  I serve it with veggies (celery, carrots) and triscuits or tortilla chips.  For the bacon part I use the crumbed bacon that you can find in small bags near the bacon bits in the store.  Less hassle than cooking bacon and chopping it up.

  • What about a Cucumber salad? ?I know cucumbers are on sale at Giant right now :)
  • Yum, that sounds delicious.  You know how I love the strawberry poppyseed salad.

Maybe you could play on the Italian theme and do some meatballs in the crockpot as an appetizer so they would be a little more filling.

Can you tell me how you make white pizza?  I really want to try to make one on the grill.

  • I've never grilled a pizza, I'm think I want to try it now. Is it hard?

I've made a super easy shrimp appetizer that is always a big hit. Use a pack of cream cheese and spread into a pie plate or small serving dish, top with chopped, cooked shrimp then pour cocktail sauce over it. I serve it with cracers.

  • Thanks for pulling through for me! :)

For apps I'm going to do hawaiian meatballs and Jen's dip with veggies and probably some chips/salsa. With the pizzas I'm going to do the strawberry poppyseed salad and either the caprese or tortellini pasta salad.

For dessert, DH wants chocolate cake with PB icing, but I might also try to do a fruit pizza in the meantime!  Now I'm hungry for all of this now!

Grilled pizza is a cinch! And we love to make it in the summer-sometimes almost every week!

We get the Indian Naan bread that is sold near the bakery section. They have it in regular, wheat, and garlic. Two come in a pack for $2.99 and its just the right size. We use garlic alot but we've used all of them and all taste great. Spread a little olive oil or margarine on the bottom of each piece so that it gets nice and crispy on the grill. From there you just build it as you would any other pizza. Sauce, cheese (recommend the fancy moz - it melts better on the grill than the reg. moz) and toppings. Throw it on the grill and put the cover down. It dosen't take long - just until everything is melted and crispy! :)

You can also get the larger round pre-made pizza crusts that are in the baking aisle. I'm sure the same process would work for that, might just take longer than the Naan bread on the grill.

  • Stacey - I'll pull out my white pizza recipe in a few minutes and repost it. It is yummy!
  • Your menu sounds yummy Megan!  And I love that Tandorri (Indian) Naan bread, soooo good!  I'll have to try it as a pizza crust, sounds interesting.

It works awesome as a pizza crust! I'm not sure how/why we started using it that way, but I'm glad we did!

  • Thanks for the recipe. I'm going to try it once I have a kitchen again.
