POLL inspired by my slacker-ness: Car Inspections

Do you get your car inspected as soon as its within the 3-month window, somewhere in between, or do you wait until right before its due?

I will admit that I just remembered about it the other day at lunch and called today...luckily they could do it on Saturday...phew!

Re: POLL inspired by my slacker-ness: Car Inspections

  • We're bad. We usually are lucky if we end up getting it done 3 months after its due.

  • I always end up waiting until right before it runs out, and its not intentional. I just always forget.
  • I tend to try to time it with an oil change or other service, so it varies. This round it was very early -- March, for a May due date.
  • I was just pulled over on Friday because my inspection was up in June of 2008! I still don't think thats right. I could have sworn it was inspected last year but I can't find any of the paperwork and my sticker did say 08 so I can't really argue.

Next year I think I am going to get it done asap, lol.

I usually do an oil change with mine too...in fact that's getting done Saturday too :)

  • Both of our cars are due in the summer (mine is June, DH's is July), and since I have the summers off, I take care of them (and where DH could care less and would wait until the very last second to get them inspected, I'm a bit anal about making sure things are done on time Embarrassed ).  That said, I did mine mid-June since that was the earliest I had a free day; DH's was taken care of at the beginning of July, but only that early due to how insane the rest of this month was/is.
  • One good thing about Maryland, no yearly inspections, just emissions testing every 3 years.  But I had to do it, I'm like Ashlee, things have to be done early.

  • I'm usually early about that~however last year it was a week late and this year TWO MONTHS LATE! The funeral director at my Uncles Funeral noticed and told me, great time to find out Indifferent But luckily within a week I was in! And got my oil changed as well!

Glad to hear I'm not the only one! :)

  • We are usually good at getting them done before they expire, but my car's ran out in Dec '08 and I didn't get it inspected until the end of February this year.  I just didn't notice it was expired, until I was getting body work done from the accident we were in, and it was pointed out to me.  I was surprised DH didn't notice either...he's usually really good about keeping an eye on those things.  I don't think we ever have gone early...I want the inspection to last the full year :o)
  • I had no idea you could have it inspected 3 months before it was due.  I thought it was one month all this time.  That being said I usually try to schedule an oil change at the beginning or middle of the month its due.
  • usually late but I did them 3 mos early this year with the baby coming

you still get credit for the full year if you go early. they give you the same month sticker that you already have

  • I'm the one that sees the cars get inspected, and everything else for that matter.  I swear I have no idea how DH survived before he met me Wink  That being said, one of our cars is due up for inspection by the end of this month.  I just scheduled it for this past Monday.  It failed.  Well, we need to replace a ball joint and then we'll get the inspection sticker.  DH is doing the repair himself, so right now we're waiting on the part to arrive.  Hope it's all done by next Friday!

To answer the question, I normally try to get the inspections done at least a month before they are due. I get this from my dad, who is the type of person who will generally have the cars inspected as early in the 3-month window as possible.

  • We are big-time slackers with this, and renewing registrations.  My car was about a month late getting inspected, and about 3 months late w/ registration renewal (got a warning from a *nice* police officer about this, lol).  DH's car is supposed to be inspected this month...and with 9 days left in the month, I doubt it'll happen.  We used to really good with all that kind of stuff, but for whatever reason the past few years we've been more lax about it all.

ETA: I had no idea about the 3 month window either.  I thought you had to wait until the month you were due.  Good to know!

  • I get it done within the month that it is due.

  • When I took care of it, I used to do it some time during the month it was due.

I've now handed this task over to DH.

  • We get ours done the month it's due. My car is due this month and DH just called for an appointment today!
  • I'm usually pretty good about this. My inspection is due in December, so I try to book early to have it out of the way before craziness of the holidays. In 2007, I had it in in the beginning of November since I knew it was going to need quite a bit of work and I wanted to have time to get that taken care of.  This year, however, I slacked and didn't end up getting it in until January 2. I'm glad to hear that others have been later than me! We're just lucky that our mechanic is one of DH's good friends, so he was able to squeeze me in on short notice.
  • We are horrible. We wait til the last week of the month it is due then call my dad panicking(he inspects our cars) because we forgot to get them done!

  • This last time I got it done right at the beginning of the three month window, but that was because it was due for an oil change and it seemed to make sense to do it all at once. Usually it is pretty close to the due date.
