My family always goes on a shopping trip to Pennsylvania every November.
I want to go but I?ll be 30 weeks pregnant?
Some family members say I should be fine we?ll take it slow, and others say to forget it as I?ll be too uncomfortable. It?s a 3 day 2 night trip by Motor-coach. It is a lot of walking but the deals we get are AMAZING! So I?m not sure if I should go or not?!? The money is due in September. So here?s my list of Pros & Cons:
Pros
- Great, amazing, unbelievable saving for Christmas gifts and baby items [no tax in PA for kids stuff]
- Spend time with family [it?s ladies only]
- Last mini-holiday before the baby arrives
- A lot of walking
- Get ?missing? items after my baby shower
- Spending $199 (for room & travel cost)
Cons
- Uncomfortable the whole time
- Early labor in the USA $$$
- Slow my family down due to pit-stops
- Spending $199 (for room & travel cost) and $500 shopping limit - 2 months before Mat. Leave
- A lot of walking
Now I know it?s my decision in the end but I thought I?d get some suggestions/ideas from those more experienced LOL
p.s. I'll post the flyer later on in case anyone one ese in interesed, you can contact the organizer directly.
Re: I?m Stuck?WWYD?
You know, everyone is different. I had problems with my hips throughout my pregnancy and sitting for too long was excrutiating. Driving for that long might be a real problem for you. Or it might not.
Can you hold off making a decision until closer to the trip?
If you really want to go, would you consider driving down instead of taking a bus? I'm just thinking that they don't have a lot of room and they only stop at scheduled stops. You may need to stretch your legs more frequently.
Aside from that and how you are feeling, the only other consideration is whether you would be eiligible for out of country insurance. Most people have this through their extended benefits, but it tends to be minimal. You might want to call CAA or a place that provides travel insurance to ask. The policies are pretty cheap (especially for a few days) and you'll get better coverage (ie emergency medivac ride back to Canada) than most policies that are lumped into an extended benefits plan.
Does the bus have a bathroom?
PA is tax free on everything not just kids stuff.
Really, not that taxes in the states are that bad anyway? Has that always been true? Why? I wouldn't think of them as a big $ making state.
Some places have higher income taxes and no sales taxes, etc. Like Alberta. Even though now Alberta is doing really well $$$ because of oil, their income taxes are flat at 10% (so low, middle income is paying more than in Ontario).
At 30 weeks, I was already having a lot of hip and pelvic pain with both of my pgs. Walking was not always fun. I personally would be nervous at the possibility of going into labour while away from hom. Just think, if by chance it happens, your Dh would miss out on being their for the birth of your first child.
During my last trip to the US, 10 months ago, I didn't find things to be that much cheaper than here thanks to the resession.
I think your doctor might say you need to be able to stretch your legs or stop for a break every hour or so, might be difficult to do on a bus.
At that stage in my pregnancy I think I'd find that trip tiring, especially cause I'm not in control of the schedule...but everyone is different!
I am not sure how long it has been like that. When I lived in NJ 7 years ago PA was tax free so I think it has been a long time.
Yes there is a bathroom on the bus and TV?s (it?s lone of those super duper tourist looking ones)
I know we stop approximately every 3 hrs and I was thinking about the stretching, I know I can stand on the buss and hold on to the rails if I need to.
The travel insurance is a great idea, JUST in case
Jen ?I think your right, the only thing I remember paying taxes on was Christmas Ornimants 2 yrs ago. Otherwise I pay what?s on the price tag.
Also about the schedules ? that another thing I didn?t think of.
I know that the bus shuttles back a forth to the hotel 8 times per day (the hotel is literally across from the Outlet Mall) so if I did get tired I can always go back to the room. And I can hang out at the Food court too?LOL I?m thinking about my options.

Q: how often do births at 30wks happen? I mean, is it more yes?s than no?s?should I be worried?
I don't think it is common to go into labour at 30w but it could happen. That is why girls end up on bedrest. My sister went onto bedrest at 32w and delivered at 36w. Up to the point of 32w she was fine in her pregnancy...no issues at all (except for her gallbladder). But when she hit 32w her blood pressure shot up.
The best bet would be to ask your doctor as your pregnancy progresses.
The outlet malls in PA are awesome. My sister was there a few months ago and said that there weren't that many deals though.
