Having a yahpee moment.. contacts question

So I'm a contact wearing virgin. Well, not anymore. Wink

Just got contacts 2 days ago... still getting used to them.

Here's my probably very stupid question:

Can you tell if your contacts are inside out? How can you tell which is the front vs the back? (I know which is the top vs. bottom because of the numbers right?)

Does it matter if they are ever "inside out?"  Hmm

  • Follow up to this:

Also I'm on a contacts trial run-- so far so good but I don't know any different? What should I be looking for to consider? What would make you ask your optometrist to try another brand?

  • When you set the contact on your finger, it should be a perfect 1/2 circle. If the edges look like they are flat at all, then it is backwards. If you put it in inside out, it will irritate your eye. You will know! I don't remember which brands I wore (I had Lasik done a few years ago.), but I ended up using the ones that I could throw away each day because they had more moisture.

  • If it's inside out, you'll probably feel discomfort immediately after putting them in. The PP gave a good tip about seeing a half-circle vs. a slightly flat shape, but I've encountered tricky lenses that still form a perfect half-circle even when they were inside out.

Top vs. bottom doesn't really matter unless you have contacts for astigmatism. But those usually have little hash marks so you can figure out proper placement, not numbers. I don't think I've ever had contacts with numbers on them.

Mine has a little line that you're supposed to put on the bottom . . . but honestly I just put 'em on however. My eyes adjust to the correct position sooner or later.

I do have astigmatism in one eye.. so I was taught to look for the little hash marks just wasn't sure about the inside out part.

I guess so far I've been putting them on right then.

    Thanks so much!

  • i'm not sure if this applies to every brand of contacts, but i was taught to do the "taco test."

pick up the contact with your fingertips using your thumb and pointer finger. ?push it into the shape of a taco shell. ?if it kind of flips inside out and hugs your fingertips, it's inside out. ?if it pushes out into the right shape, you're good.

    does that even make sense??

  • I have worn contacts for many years.  You will know if they are inside out but it might not be too obvious depending on the brand.  I just switched to Acuvue 2 and the only reason I know they are inside out is because they slip around on your eyeball versus staying put.  You will also notice your vision is not quite right.  Mine have 12 typed into the contact (you don't feel it).  When they are backwards(as you hold it on your fingertip ready to put in) they are correct.  Doesn't really make sense but that's the way it is.

Most of the time I wear them I don't even feel that they are there.  It's only towards the end of the day or when it's dry (lots of air conditioning) that they get a little dry and you can feel them a little.

I think you will like them a lot.  The hardest part is getting over putting them in which you seem to have gotten over already.
