Name change Q's

Hi Guys I am currently a knottie and had some questions about name changing after the marriage. We arent taking our honeymoon until Dec, about 3months after the wedding, Aug 29th. My question is, does this give me enough time to change all my documents and get my new passport, or should I just wait until after the trip? I dont want to be stuck without my passport and/or have half of my identification saying one name and half the other. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Re: Name change Q's

  • You might be cutting it close. If I remember correctly, it takes up to 10 weeks to receive your marriage certificate, which is the first document you need to change your name. Then you will have to use that to change anything else. So that would only give you 2 weeks to get your new passport, drivers license etc. You will probably want to book your honeymoon with your maiden name. HTH!
  • Ditto Andrea. You won't have your paperwork back in time to even be able to apply for your passport. I would just keep everything in your maiden name and then book your trip in your maiden name. When you get home you can get everything changed.
  • I agree with above post;

    Get your marriage certificate processed and every other form ready and then upon return from honeymoon; change everything.

  • Ditto everyone else. I honestly wouldn't change my passport until it expires, at the amount they charge. I have everything else changed, but it's been handy to have one picture ID in my maiden name while I change all the small little things - I used it last summer to write my jurisprudence exam because I'd forgotten to change my name with my regulatory college.
  • I agree with all the posts. You are getting married in the summer so it is high season for marriages so the Registrar General will be busier and it may take the max time in Ontario is 8 weeks to be registered before you can even apply for your marriage certificate. It will be easier for you to book your HM under your maiden name and change everything in the new year.
