Wait - you need a licence to be a stripper??

I was listening to the news and they were discussing how the strike in Toronto is affecting strippers because they can't renew their licences.  Seriously??  Why do you need a licence to be a stripper?

Is it to try to keep underage/illegal workers from entering the "profession"?  Most licenced professions have educational requirements and standards  - lol I wouldn't even want to imagine how you would qualify for a stripper licence if it was similar.

Re: Wait - you need a licence to be a stripper??

  • yes, totally true. It's a Burlesque license.

Two girls in my class in highschool went and got theirs in OAC year. *applauds & rolls eyes*

  • It might just be a Toronto thing, considering it's the city of TO that issues the licenses. Most "professions" are self regulated. Ie. it is the engineers themselves that regulate the license of professional engineering
  • I think it is a municipal thing, however, I think almost all municipalities have them. It is like having a vendor's license or registering a gun. Just another way for the gov't to keep "control" of the industry. e.g. If a stripper is foung doing "extras" for clients, her licence is removed. If a strip joint is found to have dancers that aren't licenced they can be shut down etc.

Windsor, besides having high unemployment and a strike by city workers, also has one of the highest ratios of strip joints per capita! Yeah! (Sarcastic tone intended).

  • Well, the strippers in Montreal don't need licenses, I know that much.  I think we're the strip club capital of Canada too.  This is an interesting concept though, I'd never heard this about Toronto before.  But actually not a bad idea.
