Where to look in TO?

My friend is having a pre-mid life crisis (or so it would seem) and she is seriously talking about moving to TO. She is going for a wedding in a few weeks and is staying a few extra days to check out the city. Soooo, I thought I'd ask you lovely ladies where the best place might be for her to start her search for housing, etc. She likes to go out, so proximity to nightlife and shops would be ideal, and she would prefer not to drive, so she wants to be close to public transit. Her budget would likely be about $1500/month for rent as she's not looking to buy anything. Thoughts?

Re: Where to look in TO?

  • We have tons and tons of condos in Toronto all over the city. One of the bigger up and coming areas is Liberty Village which is at Duffering and King (roughly), they have some great loft style condos there. And some really great bars & restaurants

Any of the condos along the Lakeshore are really nice and city accessible.

Danielle lives right downtown so she might know some great places.

  • Off College St. , in Little Italy, seems to be a desirable neighbourhood. My SIL lives there and enjoys it.
  • I used to live in High Park and had a 1 bedroom apartment. It was tiny (like 400 sqft) and it cost me $1400/month + utilities. That was 5 years ago so I can only imagine what it goes for now.

Hopefully she has some luck finding something for $1500. But with all the condo's that have gone up right downtown she may get lucky.

I love High Park! I also like the Distillery District. We went there for a fund raiser and it was so neat! I have no idea what cost would be but there are quite a few buildings around.

  • Yonge & Eglinton is a great area. You can rent a one-bedroom for about $1100.

  • It depends on what type of place she's looking for. There are Bachelor "apartments" - ie, parquet floors, no dishwasher, laundry in the basement of the building etc that would definitely be less than that..or possibly one bedroom places.

We rent our condo downtown (1 bedroom - near Yonge and Bloor area) for less than 1600. But when we moved in 6 years ago, the rent started at 1400. It's gone up over the years obviously.

There are lots of places, just depends on what her standards are, or how big of a place she wants, what amenities she wants. If she wants just a plain ol place to sleep, there will be tons of places. If she wants a fancier condo type with ensuite laundry, dishwasher etc, it might be more expensive.

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask! Tell her good luck - I like Toronto..and the nightlife is definitely good.

This would be my vote too, I often hear it refered to as Yonge and Eligible, so it may be just the place for a mid life crisis! There are lots of young professionals, it's near restaurants, shops, nightlife (although not really the club scene, I don't think). Anyway, busy part of town. I don't know much about the rent, but I know a bunch of ppl my age (mid 20's) who live up there, so it can't be *that* much if they can afford it.
