teaching question

Hi everyone! I am looking into information about teaching careers in your state.  My husband and I are both high school teachers and are looking to move to the U.S from Canada.  I am trying to gauge what the teaching climate is like in your state (i.e., jobs, relative pay, etc?)  Or, if you have any recommendations/advice on any states that are especially good for teachers, please let me know!  I thought a few years back that I heard of some states that were offering signing bonuses to teachers who committed to 2 years?  Anything like that still available?  TIA

Re: teaching question

  • I think right now is a really bad time.  At the school I teach at, they had to let one teacher go at the end of last year, and are not hiring any new teachers this year.  I also know that several surrounding districts do not have any opens this year.  I got a signing bonus last year (it was my first year) but it wasn't that much, and it was only for the year.  I wish I had better news for you.  I think there are good signing bonuses if you teach ESL or Math or Science...the touble is finding a school that has an opening.  Good Luck.  I definitely think it will pick up, but right now is just a rough time for everyone, in every industry.

  • Ditto what pp said. ?Also, there's a wide range in salaries across the state. ?Generally, the urban areas pay starting in the 40K+ range now, but the state minimum salary is only 28K, I think, so a lot of the rural areas pay starting out in the upper 20s/low 30s. ?At the high school level, they're most interested in math/science teachers. ?History jobs still typically go to coaches, but not always. ?Special ed and any foreign language skills get more attention. ?In SpEd, there's often a stipend for teaching the self-contained classes. ?Bilingual teachers usually get stipends on top of their salary, too. ?Most people at the hs level that want to make extra money either coach or sponsor an activity so they get the stipend.

  • Urban districts might have a few openings and there are a few suburban districts that are still opening up new schools (especially in Tarrant And Denton counties in North Texas).  However, a lot of teachers stayed put this year.  Ditto the pp about history teachers.  Most of our coaches teach history so it may be a bit more difficult to get a history position down here.  Other schools in other states might be different though.  Good luck!
