Cloth Diapers and Registries

I'm looking into CDing and was wondering if you ladies know of any stores or websites where I can register for CDs.  I've looked at the Baby Superstore, but they have a pretty limited selection.  I was ideally (and I know this might change) looking for the BumGenius 3.0.  Any ideas?

Re: Cloth Diapers and Registries

  • I know this isn't exactly answering the question but I know there are some CD services that will do gift certs towards service. (?)
  • My friends sell cloth diapers at http://www.tinytreehuggerdiapers.com/ and they have a gift registry on their website.

I don't see the Bum Genius on their website but they have lots of other brands.

  • I am almost positive that Diaper Eez (on Bloor in High Park area) carries Bum Genius. I would highly suggest going into the store and looking at a bunch of diapers before choosing one kind. They are super helpful and knowledgable and will steer you in the right direction.

Bum Genius AIO are just so damn expensive!

We ended up doing chinese prefolds for during the day and Mother Eez fitteds with inserts for night time. I may get a few Bum Genius for when we are out or he is being baby sat.

Great!  That's right by my work, so I'll definitely take a look.  Price-wise, it seems like an investment up front, but what about when you compare to what you'd be paying to buy other types in all the different sizes you'd need?  I haven't done the math, so I'd love any comparisons you have.  It would seem to me that they might be comparable in the long run.

Also in comparison to disposables, I'd think these would be a cost saving option.  I'm not sure I could get my husband to agree to prefolds or fitted with covers.  Seems like the AIOs are the most convenient.

Any thoughts you have a definitely welcome as I'm just starting to gather info.

  • In comparison to the prefolds there is no cost savings. Don't have the catalogue in front of me but I think BumGenius are about $15-20 each and prefolds are $30 for a dozen. Considering you should start with about 30 diapers, it is a big investment. But definitely cheaper than disposables. I think we ended up paying between $250 and $275 for all our diapers and inserts once all was said and done. (plus another $20 for fabric to make cloth wipes. The savings alone makes it worth it for me - besides all the other great benefits)

Whatever works for you and DH. Everyone is different. I sold mine on the prefolds because his bestfriend and partner were already using them for their little guy. He figured if he could do them, anyone could.

CandianBio - I'm going to PM you with some questions, if that's okay!
  • Sure, I'll do my best. I'm going to see if I can find an email my friend sent to me re: CDing and send it to you as well.

    Awesome, Jen.  Thank you.

  • We CD Ruari, and will CD #2.  Here is my biggest piece of advice....

    TRY BEFORE YOU BUY!!!

I made the mistake of being talked in to a certain type of pocket diapers.  I did all the research, etc., and they got great reviews, and worked wonderfully for friends.  Well...they leaked like crazy.  I was so frustrated, we almost quit CDs for good.  It turns out that what we got doesn't work that well for skinny babies (and Ru is a slim Jim).  I tried a different type of CD, and fell back in love with them.  The lesson that I learned was that every baby is different, and CDs fit every baby differently.  What works for one person may not work for another.  What looks great on paper, may not work that well for you.  We also tried pre-folds, and once again, because Ru is so skinny, we had leaks galore, plus DH wouldn't touch them (apparently his engineering degree did not prepare him for that!).

There are tons of stores and places that have trial runs, where you 'borrow' a set of diapers for 2 weeks and test them out.  I wish we had found one before we'd bought all the diapers for Ru.

And....as for the BG (and again, what works for one person, may not work for another), they are the last diaper that I put Ru in.  I found that the velcro is crappy, and I had a few where the elastic went.  The inserts also get smelly (and I follow washing directions).  If you're looking for a one size, there are a few on the market that may work better.

We love out CDs...we're heading to Maine for a week, and it's killing me to not be able to use cloth.  Oh...and check on your local used websites (like Craigslist).  I got Ru's med. Fuzzi Bunz (which I love by the way) for super cheap.

  • We use Bum Genius 3.0 and even though most people say they are a little more pricey, the reason we purchased these is that they are from 7-35lbs so this is the only diaper we will need for baby.  We did the AIO and they are amazing.  We have 18 diapers and our total investment over the time that you figure LO will be in diapers the savings are huge.  We als do not use wipes we use thin washcloths.  I also wash them myself.  We got them from a store in the city (edmonton) www.birthsource.ca they ahve free shipping on a certain amoutn spent.  I really like ours.  But like a few posts stated you should maybe get a few and try them out and figure which ones work best for you.
