my birth story

First of all... Thank-you all for the congratulations... I enjoyed reading the posts. and I no longer have the internet at home, so I'm not on as much as I would like to be. Seems like whenever I use the computer at my dad's house, he just wants me to get to work... since I'm "on the computer anyways". hmmmmmmm.

yes, I definitely knew that something was up when I responded to Jenn's page that night, but didn't want to jump any guns. I was also tempted to be *that* nestie who comes here btwn contractions to let you in on the details, but we decided to pack a hospital bag instead.

I started feeling contractions Mon night at 8:30 (during the Bachelorette). didn't think much of them at the time... as they were similar to ones I had been having for the last few weeks. When I went up to bed (to go online) at 10, I noticed they were getting into a pattern. when it started to get hard to concentrate while playing computer games at 11pm, I jumped in the shower for relief, and started timing them soon after. all the while, DH is watching the Dark Knight, not wanting to believe that this was the night. I timed my contractions and moved around a lot until 12:30 when DH's movie ended, and he started to time them and pull things out for a trip to the hospital. Around this time they were 5 minutes apart - had been since 11pm. At 1:30, they were getting intense and I was having good back pain during the contraction, so we called the hospital to let them know we were coming, and called my mom to come over, since Noah was sleeping and we didn't want to disturb him to bring him to my parent's house.

My mom was at my house by 2am, we finished packing etc and left for the hospital at 2:30. the half hour drive was rough! every contraction was amplified by any turns or bumps in the road. Got there at 3am to be assessed at 2-3 centimeters. So I jumped in the shower right away to ease the back pain. Stayed in the water for a good 45 minutes, then onto the OmniBall for another 45 minutes. We didn't bother timing contractions (like we did with Noah)... but the nurse told me that they were coming every 3 minutes lasting an intense 45 seconds or so (similar with Noah). And at times, they were coming on top of each other... like only 1 minute between. again, my body reacted to the pain by thowing up - maybe 8 times.

At 5:30am, my water broke on its own with a strong contraction and they checked me again... I was a lip away from being 10cm! no wonder why it was so crazy intense. Also, during my breathing, I really focused on the word "open" in my mind... I think that helped me open quickly. they called my doctor to come in, as I had the urge to push and had to hold off.

so about 45 minutes of intense pushing... I was exhausted (contrax were coming very quickly, some right on top of each other!). When he was crowning, I was in so much pain that I started yelling how much it hurt, so I wasn't using my energy to push. The doc sternly told me to "stop yelling and push". The head came out quick, but then he had a bit of shoulder displacia. So the nurse was reaming on my stomach while the doc had her hand up me to dislodge him. It was horrible to say the least. baby was out soon enough, but didn't make a sound. DH was in total shock as the doc and nurses really tried to get him to cry... so much that DH had to go lay on the floor (after telling me it was a boy, and he cut the cord). it was the longest 2 minutes of his life. all the while I was in my oxytocin-induced state of love. But after seeing that he was breathing fine, they put him on me, and concluded that he just didn't want to cry.

He was born at 6:15am on Tuesday July 14th, weighing 10lbs4oz and 22inches long. His head was 36cm, compared to Noah's 38.5... other than the head size, at birth they looked identical. After a few hours, we decided to name him Jeremy David (my maiden name is his 2nd middle name) (our last name).

So Jeremy just doesn't cry much, sleeps a lot, and is overall a great baby. He left the hospital weighing 9lbs6oz, and at his check-up 4 days later, he was back up to 10lbs1oz... so he is eating really well.

Noah is reacting like we expect... a few jealous moments, but loves to kiss him and talk to him.

Re: my birth story

    Left, Right
  • That is wonderful! Congratulations!  Glad you are all doing well
  • wow what a story, congrats again!
  • Thanks for posting Rachel, I was hoping you were going to check in soon, I've been wondering how you've been doing.  I saw on fb you lost your internet at home which sucks, hopefully you find another connection soon! Although I'm pretty sure you're busy enough these days without the distraction of the internet!

Sounds like the birth went fairly quickly, how very scary when the little guy wouldn't cry after he was born (I was getting worried even reading it!)

I am happy to hear that everyone is doing well and look forward to more pictures and updates from you and your little men.
