Dog Breeds

So, I think DH and I considering getting a puppy!  We have the great debate over Yorkies vs. Dachshunds.  We know that we want a smaller dog (the smaller the better IMO) but can't agree.  So, tell me about the dog or dogs that you have and why I should convince DH to get that breed.  I figure if we can't agree on the two breeds mentioned above I should introduce an alternative choice we might both like!

Re: Dog Breeds

  • I have a shorkie.  She's a yorkie/shih tzu mix.  She's the biggest mess in the world, but we love her.  She honestly has one of the coolest personalities I've seen in a dog in a long time.  She's very loving, cuddly, and energetic.  And . . . she doesn't shed at all.  :-)

I know that doesn't help, because she's part yorkie, but yorkies truly are GREAT dogs.  Sorry for the massive picture.

  • We have a chihuahua and she is the greatest little pup ever! Although she is a bigger chihuahua she is small enough to cuddle and take places regularly but big enough to not get sat or stepped on! I don't necessarily think that the breed is as important as the dogs personality though. Because most chihuahuas that I have met are more skiddish and yappy and Cosmo is neither of those! So maybe look less at the general breed and go look at a few different ones and see if one stands out to you.

  • I have 2 pugs and they are like our children (pics in siggy). They are great dogs and have tons of personality. Both are very snuggly and love nothing more than to be cuddled up with DH and me. They also love to play though and love playing tug of war, wrestle, or fetch with DH or each other. They also both think that they are guard dogs... but they wouldn't hurt a fly. They are super sweet with my niece and nephew when they come and visit and warm up quickly to people when we have visitors. We really like their size too.

If  you have any pug questions, let me know!

  • I have two maltipoos, and I love them, I think they are the best dogs every.  Now, before someone goes all crazy and tells me maltipoos are not a real breed, clearly they are, I have two...see picture in siggy. Plus, I like the mixed breeds, I'm a mixed breed (shout out to the swedish germans on the board).  They are fun and just have neat personalities.  My sister has a daucshund and she is a sweet fun dog as well.  Both of the breeds I mentioned have a lot of energy. Good Luck in your seach!

  • You may want to consider a maltese (see the cute, white dog in my siggy Smile )  The breed standard is 4-6 lbs.  I wanted one after falling in love with a friend's.  The ones I've been around are all so sweet and very bright.   Playful at times, but also love to curl up on your lap.  They don't shed.  It took me forever to convince DH to get one since he'd always wanted a big dog, but he cannot imagine life without her now.  She's such a daddy's girl.

Of course, I love my chihuahua too, although he's mixed with something else, probably rat terrier, and his demeanor does not seem typical of the other chihuahuas I've been around.

  • I have two daschunds and they could not be sweeter. I am not really a dog person, but DH had a daschund (a girl) when we met and I became immediately attached to her. When she died a few years ago, we got two more.

The thing about daschunds, in my experience not only with ours but with others we know, is that they have such personalities. Our little girl is just all girl, sweet, kind of likes to take care of herself (doesn't have to follow me around 24/7). Our little boy is all boy--he's a little ham, loves to fight, and has to be with one of us at all times.

We just love them and will never have any other breed.

  • We have two shih tzus and they are adorable - but I love yorkies as well.

Their personalities are completely different, Louis is laid back, very friendly and loving.  Coco is a demanding, little yapper and doesn't take to well to others.  But we are working with Coco and she is getting better.  We have kepts both of our dogs in long hair and I will say that they do have to be brushed every day, I do it when I get home from work it is a good way to unwind from the day.  But you don't have to keep shih tzus in long hair though, they look adorable with short hair.

I have some pictures of them here:

I say play with some different breeds of dogs and see what you both think - some shelters have adoption fairs at pet stores where you can see the dogs and get a sense of what they are like.

  • I'm a huge proponent of rescue, so whichever breed you decide on please consider saving a pup from a shelter or rescue group!

  • We have five dogs a lab mix(loves attention), a hound dog(wants to sleep all day and howl all night), a border collie (barks and runs in circles just for fun of it!), A french bulldog, and a english bulldaog puppy. All of which are girls my DH says its about time for a boy!

I would recomend a frenchie they are very loving and protective. We have had a couple of liters from our little buttercup and she is the best little mommy! The dogs are active and do need some sort of activity during the day but wrestling or playing catch is perfect. Our little girl is bit on the chubby side and normally ends up sitting and refusing to git up about middle way through a walk! LOL! They can weigh any where from 17-30 lbs of coarse boys are a bit bigger but the are still cute.

If you have any question about the breed please feel free to holler at me!

I second the rescuing! We got our black pug from the DFW pug rescue. You should look at shelters, petfinder, or breed specific rescues =)

  • We have a Yorkiepoo who is a year old in a week and she is the best dog we have ever had! She is 4.5lbs and is so much fun and soooo good with the kids!  Here she is as a puppy with my dd!

we got our puppy from http://www.angelsyorkies.com/ and she is wonderful!

  • We have a Maltipoo and we love her! She is so adorable and playful. And she loves to cuddle! I grew up with a Maltese and they are adorable and really similar to a Maltipoo. But I love how the Malitpoo had a little curl in her hair- it's really cute. And she doesn't shed- so that's what made DH say "yes" about getting her. He is totally in love with her right now! Oh, and she weighs 6.5 lbs. They can range anywhere from 3-10 lbs.

We're actually dog sitting a Yorkie right now. He's really cute. A little calmer than our Maltipoo. But he's a sweet dog- just not as playful as our Maltipoo.

  • I have a 7 year old doxie and I love him to death. He's been my baby since he was 7 weeks old. He's so sweet, and so lovable. He barks when the doorbell rings (which is nice when you are home alone) but then is immediately friends with anyone who comes over. He's such a snuggler. He sleeps with DH and I at night- snuggles in right in between us under the covers- it's hilarious. My neighbor here has a 5 mo old doxie and he's just as cute. Maverick (mine) and Huey (hers) love to play together and are so cute to watch. Mav has been around babies and kids and is great with them as well. I know that he will have a bit of adjustment to make when our little girl gets here (just because my attention will be directed towards her much more than him) but I think he will be her protector in the end. It's funny too how close Mav and DH are too. He was my dog for years before I met my DH. But you'd think they had been together since he was born- they are so cute together. I love doxies and think they are great dogs! (They are sooo popular here in Japan too!)

That's how it was with our little girl who died. DH had her for years before we met, but it didn't take her but a month to become my little shadow. She followed me everywhere, slept by me, attached DH when he would hug me. It was so funny.

And all of ours are the same way about sleeping. Our little girl now sleeps either under my  pillow or at my legs. Our little boy sleeps right between us.

  • We have a yorkie and couldn't be happier.  DH was a little hesitant at first about getting a "girly" dog, but he loves our little guy so much.  Not all dogs will have the same personality, but our yorkie is full of energy, good around kids, loves to snuggle, and is spoiled rotten.  A lot of people say yorkies are hard to train, but we really didn't have many potty accidents and he learned several commands really quickly.  Yorkies are super loving dogs and like to get a lot of attention, so think about that when you are deciding.  Our yorkie weighs about 9 lbs and he is 3 years old.  I would be hestitant to buy a teeny tiny one since they tend to have more health problems than the bigger ones.  Good luck!!
  • I dont have a dog, but my mom does, and I LOVE him.  He is a maltese, and has the best personality.  He is very cuddly, but also has a decent amount of energy.  Its also cute how he thinks he is a "big dog".  Oh, and the best part is that he doesnt shed!

That being said, I am a HUGE fan of adopting.  Id like a dog as soon as I get my own place again, I know Ill be going to shelters first.  There are always good breed and pure breeds...just have to look around and frequent the shelter!

  • Our dog Snoopy was a Lhasa Apsos and West Highland Terrier mix. He passed away this past January after a long and happy life. He has left a hole in my heart. I have just started looking at dogs again but feel as if no dog will ever be as good as snoopy. Below is both breed info.

The Lhasa Apso (lha-sah ap-so) is a non-sporting dog breed originating in Tibet. It was bred as an interior sentinel in the Buddhist monasteries, who alerted the monks to any intruders who entered. Males weigh about 14-18 pounds and females weigh between 12-14 pounds. They require patience but in return can be quite comical, entertaining and caring companions. They aim to please their owners and enjoy training. People with allergies can co-exist with the low-shedding breeds of dogs, including the Lhasa Apso, when they are properly cared for.

West Highland White Terriers, commonly known as Westies, are a breed of dog known for their distinctive white coat. Originating in Scotland, the breed was used to seek and dig out foxes and badgers. A male typically weighs between 15 and 20 pounds and a female between 13 and 16 pounds. This breed is a non-shedding dog.
  • Thanks everyone for such great information!!  Hopefully this will help us make a decision!
  • ok I'm late, but I have to pimp out my yorkie as well.  He is between 4-5 lbs, full of personality, immensily loyal, loves to snuggle, and very smart.

My husband is a 6'6" ex-lineman and at first wanted nothing to do with a little prissy dog.  In the almost 4 years we've had Gus, DH loves him as much as I do.
