Teachers: Question about training hours to keep certification

We need 150 training hours every 5 years in order to keep our certification, correct? So that's 30 hours a year. If I have to take GT training hours, with this count towards my 30 hours? Also, if my school sends me to a training will that count? Or is it 30 hours on my own time? Is this something I pay for or do schools normally pay for it? And how do I keep track of how many hours I have (is there a place online, maybe on SBEC)?

When I was hired at my school last year I wasn't told ANYTHING. I wasn't even told that I needed to take 30 GT hours my first year (found that out late in the year and did it over the summer)! So I'm not sure how all of this works.

Thanks!

Re: Teachers: Question about training hours to keep certification

  • I have no clue because I have a lifetime cert.  I think they count, but I'm honestly not sure.  Contact your administration - either the professional development department or certification person - in your district.  GL!

  • DH is a teacher and I know that their professional development that they do throughout the year counts towards that (and I think they get enough each year to have the 30 hrs).

  • Yes, everything you do counts toward the hours you need for re-certification with SBEC. ?The only issue you might have with really keeping track about when and how you do them is if your district does "exchange hours" like mine. ?THOSE have to be done "on our time, our dime" for it to count as "exchange hours".

  • Oh, and if your district doesn't keep track for you (mine does) then you'll need to collect all your certificates and keep them in a file somewhere in case you ever get audited by SBEC (although I don't know anyone who's ever had that happen).

  • I have a lifetime cert for teaching, but when I got my ESL cert I have to have those hours. As far as I've ever been told, any training you take (on your own or that your district sends you to or that your district provides) count towards your total. You shouldn't have to pay for them (unless it is something you want to do outside of what your district will cover). My district kept track for us thru an online system- we registered for workshops online so it was tracked before we ever even went. But most workshops still handed out a certificate that I held on to. I wrote down workshops I went to as well, so that I would remember and have a list of hours. Basically, it is pretty easy to get your hours- basically the hours at inservice before the year started pretty much cover you, and then you usually end up taking things thruout the year as well. I'm sure you will have more than enough!
  • Thanks!! So far I've been keeping all my certificates that I've been given from trainings, just in case. My school district is very small so I wouldn't be surprised if they don't keep track of it.
