DIY hair color?

Does anyone dye their own hair?  If so, what brands of hair color do you like?

My mom and I are going to try coloring my hair tomorrow.  I've had it dyed at a salon before but I want to see if I can save some money and DIY it.

Re: DIY hair color?

  • The only way I have ever colored my hair is DIY but I don't remember which brand I used since it was a few years ago. I will say that when I did it, it faded really fast, especially in comparison to my sister who always got hers done at a Salon.

I'm saying that because if you spend a lot of time outside, I would recommend a salon because the color will hold up a lot better. If you aren't outside a whole lot and the sun won't have a big effect on your hair, DIYing should be fine.

    Have fun!

  • Unfortunately, I'm hardly ever outside.  I went to the salon in May after the wedding and he did a demi color and it faded really fast.  I think he was afraid of the color growing out and my roots looking funny but my hair never really has a problem with that.

  • I do! I use garnier nutrisse. I have good results. I have used others and they faded or they left my hair looking damaged.
  • This might be too late, but I use Clairol Perfect 10 and it has lasted for 2.5 months with no fading at all. I really love the stuff and it does work in 10 minutes so you don't have to sit there for so long.  I have been coloring my hair for 10 years now so I consider myself somewhat of an expert.  I had it done at the salon in the year leading up to the wedding just in case, but this color last longer than the salon color and costs a ton less.  Only problem with it working so fast that is if you get in on your clothes/skin it stains quickly, so try to remove it fast or my trick is to put vaseline around your face/hair line to avoid stains.  I highly recommend this brand!

  • I used to dye my hair a lot in college. My problem was that the color was not always consistent. Obviously, it is never the color on the package, but it seems my hair likes to pick up on the red in the dye, so as the brown would fade, the red seemed to stick. I ended up far more red than I ever wanted.

I personally never had a problem with the red fading. When I finally gave up on dying my hair, I had a professional dye the bottom to match the growing out section - even that left me with a line.

I want to dye my hair (I have a ton of greys that are bugging me actually) but I'm afraid to have the same problem I had before.

  • Is there a beauty school by you?  There are a few here and dying/highlights run anywhere from $20-$25 Smile

  • Well my mom did it!  We tried the Perfect 10.  I don't think we left it on long enough as it wasn't quite as dark as I wanted it but it did take out the red in my hair and it's a lot richer now.  And, I saved a lot of money!
