T-Shirt Quilt?

I think I remember something being posted on here a long time ago about someone locally who makes quilts out of old t-shirts.  I would love the contact information for this person and any other info you might have.

I've been going through my drawers and have decided I need to either get rid of most of my old concert tees, or do something useful with them.  I'm coming to grips with the fact that I'm never going to be that small again (some of them seriously look like they're sized for an 8 y.o. - yeah, that's not happening :).  I hate to part with them because I have so many good memories attached, so if I can make them into something functional, they won't be wasting drawer-space, it'll be the best of both worlds.

Thanks!

Re: T-Shirt Quilt?

  • I don't have the contract info, but wanted to tell you that t-shirt quilts are a great idea! I had one made out of my sorority shirts from college knowing I would never wear them all again.

And I just had a baby quilt made for my upcoming little one from DH's dad's shirts. We just used squares from the sleeves of his Hawaiian and plaid shirts, since it is a baby blanket, and therefore a bit smaller. DH's step-mom had it made in Austin. His dad passed away about 2 years ago, and I know it will be hard on him not having him around when our daughter gets here, so I had the quilt made as a surprise. I am going to give it to DH in the hospital, to take home our little girl in. He doesn't know about it, and I can't wait to give it to him! It's already packed in the bag to take to the hospital with us.

  • I would love this info. as well! I have been wanting to have this done for a reasonable price for a long time!

That is really, really sweet! That quilt will mean the world to him. And what a great time to give it to him. My dad passed away about 4 years ago and my mom gave me a quilt from his shirts the first Christmas he was gone.

  • That sounds like something I need to do too.

Any idea what the price is for what size?

  • This mother/daughter team had a booth @ Oktoberfest last year.

That is the most beautiful idea ever, I love the sentimental and meaningful emotion!!  And giving it at the hospital will be so wonderful for you both!!  Great idea!

  • Happy Kim - That is awesome.  I'm sure your DH (and eventually, your little one) are going to appreciate it so much.  Very sweet.

There are several sellers on etsy that do this.  Trying to pick one is the hard part.  I haven't looked through all of them yet, but so far I'm leaning towards this one.  I like that hers are entirely made of t-shirts, instead of t-shirt/cotton cloth combo, plus I gotta support my fellow Okies :)  Prices seem to range from $100-$280 from what I've seen so far, for the others that are interested.  Price depends on number of t-shirts used, size, etc.

  • So, will you ship your tshirts to her?  That seems expensive!

p.s. we have sunday tickets to ACL!

IDK.  I need to message her and find out more about how it works.  Her price seems pretty reasonable compared with the other etsy sellers at a glance.  We go to OKC/Norman pretty frequently, especially during football season, so maybe she'll let me drop them off in person.  I also saw this linked from her blog.  I don't know why there's a price difference, but I may try going through that instead of etsy.

P.S. We have Friday tickets.  I'm still so sad about the Beastie Boys, but it should still be a good time and we'll get to see some others we've been wanting to see.  Sunday looks like a good lineup.

  • I just realized the reason for the price difference.  That one that I linked to on her etsy site is already completed, so she must be charging more since she provided the t-shirts.  Here's the custom option on her etsy site ($50) where you provide the shirts.
