Poll: Weekend trip?

If you could take a weekend trip close to home (preferably in October when the leaves change).  Where would it be?

I would like to plan a trip for DH and I to enjoy to get away, we love the fall :)

Re: Poll: Weekend trip?

  • I think Gatlinburg is beautiful in the fall.  October is our favorite time to go.

DH already has a "man trip" scheduled in Sept to go there :(

  • The Finger Lakes Wine Trails in Central New York.  Specifically Keuka and Seneca Lakes.

This sounds beautiful...how long of a drive is this?

  • The DH and I went to Chautauqua Lake for a wedding about a month ago and we both thought it'd be a GREAT place to visit in the fall.  There's a beautiful lake.  In addition, there are a ton of wineries to visit.  We also passed some cute bed n' breakfasts.

It was about a 6 hour drive from here, so not too bad.  Smile

  • Depending on what you are looking to do, West Virginia has a few casinos and in Wheeling WV there is a casino/dog track that we stayed at a few years ago and it was really nice, our room was HUGE!

  • Lancaster County PA (Pennsylvania Dutch area).  We went there a few years ago and it was so nice.  You probably want to take a long weekend though.  Otherwise I'd say the Ohio Amish country near Wooster College.

  • I think the drive to the Finger Lake wineries is about 7ish hours.  We started in Watkins Glen at the base of Seneca Lake and worked our way around.  We camped at Watkins Glen State Park (beautiful!) for two nights but there is also Seneca Lodge or tons of B&Bs if you're not into camping.  The whole area is beautiful, especially in the fall.

  • We plan to make a trip to SE Ohio this fall, but we'll probably be too early for the leaves. We'll stay at the place where we got engaged (www.ravenwoodcastle.com - it's a bit offbeat, but we enjoyed it). There's not much city life in that area, but there's plenty of scenery. I'd think all the state parks would be beautiful in mid October.

I went to school at OU (In Athens), and the hills out there are very pretty in the fall. And, it's only a 2-3 hour drive from Cincinnati, which is great for a weekend trip.

IMO, Gatlinburg is way too crowded--we tried that in October 2007, and it was a madhouse. (took us 2 hours to drive 10 miles, the traffic was so bad, and restaurants had 2-hour+ waits for dinner)

  • We just went to Louisville over the weekend and had a great time. If you have not spent time there I highly suggest it. We are big foodie and basically went to try a couple of restaurants. We stayed at the 21C which has a gallery that is fun to walk around. The Slugger factory was right around the corner, seemed to be very popular. I have also been to the glassworks and you can blow your own glass ball. There is a lot to do and with it being so close it is nice get away...you could also go to Keenland in lexington. They have a fall meet.
    1. Last October we went camping in Hocking Hills, Ohio. It was sooo beautiful!!

    2. We are going to Murphin Ridge Lodge in October. Bed and Breakfast in Amish country...I haven't been there but it is supposed to be beautiful!
