So I'm not getting cloth diapering....

Or I'm missing something... could be that I'm just too tired to wrap my head around it right now, but can someone please explain this to me? I'm not sure that we will be getting a service, most likely it will be a DIY at home cleaning - which is not my ideal, but I think it's the only way if I want to use the AIOs as the services I'm reading on use pre folds and those seems really complicated with the pins, covers etc..

But maybe the aren't? I honestly need a step by step on how AIOs and pre folds work. I'm not sure I understand where the inserts come in either. H's big concern is the scraping of the diapers... I'm reading there is no scraping, more just dropping in the toilet and then into the dry pail and into the wash. As always I turn to you ladies as you seem to know all about these things!

Re: So I'm not getting cloth diapering....

  • We use pocket diapers- the insert you shove in to make it more absorbant. The diaper itself is really just a shell that wouldn't absorb much. You don't need inserts with AIOs or prefolds (although you can use them for extra absorbancy)

If you breastfeed, there is no reason to do anything to the diapers prior to washing- breastmilk poo is completely water-soluble and will wash cleanly away. If you use formula, though, you will need to scrape. Once your baby starts solids there may be a couple weeks where you have to scrape again, but once they're eating more and more solids their poo turns into regular poo and it just dumps in the toilet without any real effort on your part. I only had to scrape for a couple weeks, when we were transitioning onto solids (and, every once in a while, when he's sick now).

A lot of prefolds don't use pins- they use velcro covers which are easier to deal with.

    Step by step instructions:

AIO: put it on the way you would put on a disposable diaper. Done. When dirty, throw in pail.

Prefold: wrap the diaper around the baby and then put the plastic pants on top. Fasten with velcro or snaps. When dirty, throw the diaper in the pail but you can reuse the pants without washing (if they seem clean)

Pocket diapers: Stuff the insert into the pouch in the diaper. Put on baby. When dirty, remove the insert and throw both the insert and the diaper in a pail.

The bummis user guide was really helpful for me in explaining how prefolds work.

And if you're interested, the website I found it on has a great sale on the starter pack right now.

Oh and I wanted to add that a lot of them seem to have flushable liners that might help with the scraping issue.  Maybe some moms can elaborate on that and if they really do work.

  • We used Comfy Cotton Diaper Service in the GTA. They used the prefolds - and we bought Bummis wraps from them.

The prefolds were super easy to use. They sent step by step directions and after a few times I got the hang of it - I had a lot of practice the first few days.

  • Thanks Ladies - this was exactly the boost I needed to get my research done. I think I'm good.... now to hopefully convince the hubs... fortunately given that I'll be doing most of the changes I think my opinion weighs a little more on this!
  • Thanks for the info and links ladies. I was actually just talking about CD's the other day and saying that I really didn't know much about them. Links have been bookmarked for future reading!
