What to get for 1yr olds birthday?

Friends of ours are having their son's 1st B-Day party in a few weeks....What do you get a 1 yr old?

I usually ask the parent's if there's anything in particular the kid needs (like clothes or whatever) and go that route. I also think books are a nice thing to get as well.

I agree with pp--maybe ask the parents what they need for the child. If you aren't comfortable doing that, try books, some sort of educational toy, clothes.

I just went to Babies R Us yesterday with my sister so she could get a 1st birthday gift for her friend's baby. She got one of these portable placemat things http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2908461 and this LeapFrog toy http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2266040.

Even though my girls are older now, as a mom, I always appreciate books or clothes.

I usually ask, too, but recently I had two 1-yr old bday parties. For the boy, I got him these squishy toy cars (hard to explain) that make noise. He loves car, trucks, etc. For the girl, I got her a ton of clothes at Kohl's and packaged them in a sand pail with shovel.

We usually give an I bond and then some sort of toy. The last 1/2 year olds birthday party we went to I bought this HUGE (for a one year old) rubber ball. He gave up on all presents once he got the ball. Kids love balls that are as big as them.

i think toys are always good, but agree with others-ask the parents if you feel comfortable. be careful with clothes (my daughter is in 9-12 month clothes already, but only 3 month shoes)...all babies are so different!

If you can't ask the parents what the kid actually needs/likes, then books or even a giftcard for books is great. Also good are puzzles and things that might grow with the child. My son LOVES his mega blocks and puzzles from his 1st birthday gifts.
