Looking for a church (Dayton area)

DH, who has previously been pretty against going to church has decided he's like to try again.  He's been leaning more toward looking for a Catholic church (which is the church I was raised in).  So, I am looking for any suggestions you all may have of different churches/parishs for us to try out - they don't necessarily need to be Catholic, but we are both looking for more of a traditional service.  We live in Kettering, but are willing to drive if it's the right one for us. TIA

Re: Looking for a church (Dayton area)

  • Holy Angels is a nice church and close to Kettering. St. Albert's is obviously closer to Kettering, and is also nice.
  • Lots of people go to the masses on UD's campus who aren't UD students.  You can pretty much find a mass every hour until 10:00 at night on Sundays somewhere on campus, plus some of them are more informal than a tradtional mass at a parish.  DH and I however are Catholic flunkies who've gone Methodist.  DH has been to Southpark UMC on Brown St and Christ Church UMC on Shroyer.  He said that Christ's 9:00 service was "very Catholic" (traditional I guess).  They have a 10:00 service that's supposed to be contemporary.  Right now we go to a very nice church in Cincy that has only one very contemporary service.  I like the people there but I feel like the entire service is spent singing Christian pop rock-not really my thing.  I think you'd like a Lutheran church b/c they're very similar to the Catholic church.  Other mainstream Protestant denominations like the Methodists, Episcopalians, etc, might be worth a look too. I think they'd be good if you like the ritual of the Catholic church, just not the way the church is run.

  • I go to Emmanuel Lutheran in Kettering (off Rahn road). I've gone to church with my step-father who's catholic and it's similar in a lot of ways to the Catholic church IMO. There's two different services too, a "traditional" and "contemporary". I grew up in the traditional, but the contemporary one feels like you're at a concert sometimes rather than at church!
  • I really like Epiphany Lutheran on Far Hills.  They also have contemporary and traditional services and tons of additional groups you can be involved in as little or as much as you'd like. During the summer, they also have outdoor church, which we really enjoy.

  • I like Holy Trinity Church... Thats where DH and I were married.  GL!
  • We live in Miamisburg (on the east side of 75, south of Centerville, north of Springboro).  We go to St. Mary's in Franklin (Catholic) because we really liked how involved everyone seems to be in the parish, and the people are very nice. We go to the 10:30am mass on Sundays.

When we can't make that (since it's a good 10 min drive and the church fills up fast), we go to the 11:00am mass at St. Henry's (Catholic), which is just a little north of the intersection of 741 and 725 in Centerville.  We like it there, but the pews have really low backs, which seems like a small detail, but when you're sitting for an hour, it is uncomfortable!

We've also been to the larger Catholic church in Centerville  ... forget the name of it, but it's huge. The priest's name is Father Stretch and he seems like a good guy.

I would suggest trying out several parishes before committing to one ... Michael and I did this and it took a while, but we really like St. Mary's.  Good luck!
