Etiquette: gift for post-wedding celebration??

A co-worker of mine is having a dinner reception here after getting married in another country. What is the etiquette for bringing a gift? She got married about 2 months ago, and I'm probably a "back-up" for her list, given that I only received an invitation this week and the party is next weekend (in 7 days).

My guess would be to get her a gift, but a smaller denomination than a typical wedding.

TIA!

Re: Etiquette: gift for post-wedding celebration??

  • I am in the same situation.  We are going to a reception for a couple that eloped in another country.  The reception is tomorrow and I haven't decided what we are going to do.

Typically, I don't base my gifts on the cost/formality of the wedding.  I was never one to buy into the notion that your gift should cover the cost of the couple having you at their wedding.  I usually make my decision based on my relationship with the couple.

So I guess I didn't really answer your question - sorry!

    P.S. How was Vegas?

    P.S. How was Vegas?

Vegas was awesome except for the aforementioned melting bra experience LOL, I have to go to a bachelorette party tonight and I am not sure which bra I'm going to be wearing. :S  Vegas was bigger and more outrageous than I expected, we actually came out ahead playing Blackjack (DH did lose a bit playing poker but kind of expected!!) and we went on an awesome helicopter trip and landed in the Grand Canyon!!!! Cirque du Soleil (Mystere) was awesome too, and the location of our hotel was great (Flamingo) right in the middle of the strip. My feet are so sore from so much walking! The Fremont street was amazing with an LED screen a few blocks long!!!

  • I would bring a gift. I would probably give/spend the same amount that I would for a wedding where I was invited to the ceremony. But like Katie also mentioned it would depend on my relationship with the couple. That is the main driver for how much we spend on wedding gifts.
  • Funny, I ended up shopping for a similar scenario tonight and bought the couple a posh-looking cookbook. ?(I also debated on a the classic handblown glass with the blue rim margarita glasses & pitcher... they are a pretty low maintenance couple, everything else seemed too stuffy for them).
