Registering for cloth diapers?

Is that tacky?

I'm not big into the whole baby shower/registry thing, but have been told (for lack of a better word) that I need to/really should do it. That being said, we are going the cloth diaper route and have chosen what we think will be the diapers for us.

Is it tacky to register for them - I mean they are a huge expense that we could use the help with.. ?

Re: Registering for cloth diapers?

  • I did. We registered for the stuff we needed. People may not want to buy certain things, and that is totally their choice. I figure that I'll put it out there and people can decide whether or not they want to get it.

I found the baby registry to be so different from a wedding one. Our wedding one had upgrades and things that we wanted, but weren't desperate for. The baby one has things that we will definitely need in order to meet the needs of our LO (but also are more than willing to buy on our own).

  • I personally think that if you put what you NEED people will see that and feel good about getting you it.

I just got a gift for someone this Sunday and she had on there potty training seats & step stools and other things that would not be used for 2 yrs + and many looked at it and thought they should have focused on the more important things first! i.e. there was no swing-type thing or high chair nor booster seats, no bottles, no blankets (things we know she does not have) but she did put on a nursing bra for herself & the pads! riiiightttttt!

  • My only comment about why she might have put odd things on the registry is that you get a 10% completion discount, so if Adam and I buy anything from the registry we get 10% off  - which is why I have the pads and a few other things on mine, I figure I may as well get the discount if I'm going to buy them anyway.
  • Ohhhhhhhhhh......that makes sense - I hope that's what she did too!!

  • considering you're having a few showers, maybe for one of them the host can ask the guests to buy one cloth diaper each. depending on the brand you are buying, I know they can run $25 each. this may sound tacky, but I have a friend who did this, and it was so appreciated. I would appreciate this too - but thankfully for me, the guys I work with all pooled a bunch of $$ together and with that I bought my first stash for Noah. I am in the midst of searching for new cloth diapers for the lil guy and they aren't cheap.

If you can register for them, I say go for it, I just don't know if the brand you are looking at provides this service.

  • Thanks for the suggestion Rach..  it's not a bad idea, most places I'm finding I can't register for them, but can have people buy gift cards or diapers.

They really aren't cheap are they? I know I'll save in the long run, but it's alot up front. I think we're doing BumGenius 3.0 and FuzziBuns - I was going to talk to you about that tomorrow

  • I think it is a great idea to register for them. If you can't register for them at a typical store (Sears, BRU etc) you could always put it in the comment section on the registry that you are registered for CD at xyz store.
  • A friend of mine registered for cloth diapers. I see nothing wrong with registering for something that you know that you will use.
