told a friend/acquiantance today that I'm pregnant.
She says congrats, and then two seconds later says "I should really find out if the baby's healthy, cause if it's not... well I probably don't want to have it"
I was totally floored. Her logic: She knows someone (15 yrs older than me!) who passed up genetic testing, and then had a baby with downs syndrome, and it's really like hard on her marriage and life. So I don't want that and should totally find out if my baby's okay, so I can take care of it (i.e. abort), if baby's not.
And I thought asking if it was planned was rude! Yowza chacowza. This is also a person who prides herself on having impeccable manners. I do not understand the world sometimes...
Re: holy rudeness batman
How are people so rude?! I cannot believe that someone thinks that this is an acceptable response to a pregnancy announcement. It would be one thing if she had gone through this and the accompanying devastation, maybe then she would be looking out for you and advising you based on experience. But really, these stories of "I know a friend of a friend who...." are really not helpful.
I'm sorry you had to get that response from a friend. I know how much we worry during pregnancy and pray for a healthy baby, people like that do not help!
I hope your other friends and family gave you super congrats for your exciting news!
Yikes! Sorry that she responded that way to you. It sounds like she is really effected by her friend's experience and is now globalizing it to all people she knows who are having babies.
Maybe next time she can just say " I wish you and the baby a happy, healthy pregancy".
Since when does having Downs mean that you are not healthy?
WHO says that? WHO would do that anyway? This is definitely one of those moments where I would use that "Wow, that was insensitive, rude, and downright despicable. You must be highly embarrassed" sentence...
What's with all the garble above, weird nest???? And it won't let me delete...ugh...

I've never heard of one person having so many rude responses when telling that she's pregnant. I think you need to meet/associate with some new people!

That's an insane response. I would have had to walk away if someone said that to me - I would be too stunned to reply.
I hope she realizes what she said was completely inappropriate!
Yowza chacowza is right! WTF lady?!?!
Some people really are so oblivious, ignorant and stupid. Sorry, but this friend of yours tops that list, IMO.
Her comment really angers me.
