Re: I'm a stupid toursit

  • WOW!  Looks like a great itinerary, maybe a little packed, it will take some significant travel time to get to all of the places on your Friday plan, especially if you decide to linger anywhere.   All of my favorite spots in the city are in central park, so check the weather and edit your plans accordingly if you really want to spend some time in the park (I love Belvedere Castle, Bethesda fountain, and the Central Park zoo)  I do love The Boathouse, consider going early and getting a drink at the outside bar if its not too crowded.  You also might want more time at Rockefeller Center.  The murals inside the lobby at 30 Rock are spectacular, and you may want to see St. Patrick's Cathedral (right there) and there is fun 5th ave window shopping of course.
  • Looks like you've got all the tourist stuff on the list.  P.S.  I much prefer Top of the Rock to Empire State Building.

I agree. Empire just gets *way* too crowded and it can sometimes be 3-4 people deep before getting a good view. Top of the Rock has *3* different levels so the tourist flow is nice and you're not fighting to get a good view.

And i also agree that your schedule looks amazing and packed!! My honest opinions?

-Chinatown is very crowded and stinky, but Little Italy is cool (and yummy!)

-Serendipity is awesome, but be prepared for a 1.5+hr wait. Especially in the summer. When you put your name down, they always advise you to go to the pizzeria across the street for dinner, that's how much time you usually have. And there is *no room* to wait inside! So waiting outside on a hot summer day will be miserable.

-for the price of the 'suggested donations' for The Met and Musuem of Natural History, i would maybe try to focus on just one. That way you can really explore.

-and maybe look at doing the Guggenheim first on that Sunday, since it's on the east side at 5th and 89th. It'll take you out of your way for Tavern on the Green, which is on the west side of the park.

Hope that helps!! Have fun!! Little Mermaid is pretty freakin' awesome too!

  • I'm tired just looking at it.

Just keep in mind that it takes about 45 minutes on the subway to get from downtown (Battery Park where you catch the boat to ellie island/statue, ground zero) to fao schwartz. Sometimes it takes less, but always plans for issues on the subway.

Also, the museum of natural history is easily a 4 hour adventure. Even if you've been there a million times.

So I might pick the things you absolutely MUST see and then work around that. Ya know?  That way you get to see that things that are a must & can work the other stuff in as you go.

Also, did you make reservations for the restaurants you want to go to? Tavern requires reservations. They also may not be able to accommodate casual dining because they also rent out their rooms for parties. I'd also look on their website to see which room you'd like reservations to.

I might also do a late lunch/early dinner at carnegie deli. It'll be less of a wait for a table.

    HTH

  • First- I agree with people about Top of the Rock...it's much better.

Second- I see you'll be in Chinatown/Little Italy. If you'd like, my DH's firehouse is there on Broome ST (between Mott & Elizabeth) you can stop in and sign the tourist book. They have a beautiful 9/11 memorial at the front of the house.

Third- if you go to the Museum Of Natural History I suggest you stop by the Shake Shack it's on Columbus (between 77th & 78th) awesome burgers. However, the line on a weekend gets a bit long, but still always the best.

    Finally- have fun

  • What does Walk-it counter clockwise mean?  Central park it huge so you can't really walk it in half an hour. Tavern isn't that great IMO. Way overpriced for what you get. I would go to Norma's at the Parker meridian for a blow out brunch. Or wander around the upper west side for one of the popular places there.

Anyway I would consider watson's adventures instead just going the museum. It is a more fun that just wandering around unless you really love museums.

I would also do some research on pizza -- not all NYC pizza is great and most of the really famous places aren't in Manhattan they're in Brooklyn.

Best of luck with your trip.
