All of my extended family lives in Taipei and suburbs of Taipei, so I think the mudslides were totally far away.

It's ok. I had to look it up myself. And then I realized I'd said "southern Taiwan" in addition to Taipei and the suburbs of Taipei when my paternal grandmother, who indeed lived in southern Taiwan (where the typhoon hit), was already long dead.
As you can tell, we weren't close.
Mr. Mo's family is from Kaoshiung. That doesn't look so good. But his people are city folk. It looks like all the mudslides were in remote villages.
I couldn't believe that entire hotel collapsed into the river. scary.
hopefully mr. mo's fam is ok, too.
