Where to buy a table

We are looking to buy an informal dining room table for our new home.  Our old table is a small square table for 4 which is great for an apartment or eat in kitchen.  We don't have the eat in kitchen only a dining room and we need a bigger table but this is going to be our every day and entertaining table so it needs to be versatile.  We'd like for it to seat 6 minimum and have at least 1 leaf in order to make the table larger for entertaining.  The other catch is that after buying a home we and getting married we have a budget and would like to stay within the 1K range for the table and chairs.  Thus far we have looked at places like Pottery Barn, Pier 1, Value City Furniture, Ashley Furniture, Ethan Allen, Woodcraft and other such places.  Is there any other place that I seem to be missing because we just can't seem to find a table that we are willing to shell out the money for.

Re: Where to buy a table

  • We got our table & chairs at Kroger Marketplace (Liberty Township one).  We love it and I think we may have spent around $300.

  • We got ours at Ikea. Definitely cheap, but I can't believe how well they have held up. I spent about $200 on a table and four chairs about four years ago, and they look the same they did the day I bought them.
  • You could probably find a few basic wood tables at Ikea (as well as a bunch of funky tables!)  I got my table at an antique mall (the one on Route 4 in Fairfield when it was in the old location).  It looks like mahogany, traditional, and has enough leaves to seat 12 people, maybe more.  It didn't come with chairs though, but I know I've seen sets at the various antique stores.  My other thoughts were Target (they have way mroe online), JCP, or the Pottery Barn outlet in Jeffersonville.

  • Furniture Fair

walmart.com ...check out the canopy line of furniture. We have this (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=7732492) in our kitchen as a microwave and standmixer stand. It's actually a nice quality, REALLY easy to put tog. and VERY stable. We are waiting for this(http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=7941805) to come back into stock and we are going to buy the table and 6 chairs. There is free site-to-store shipping, so don't worry about it. I think with a $320 table, and 6 chairs at $450, you'd be good!

ETA: The pottery barn oulet is actually pretty expensive when it comes to furniture, and things are often damaged. I also suggest JCPenny (I think there is a store in the Dayton area that carry's furniture) and Macy's furniture in Kenwood (although I'm not sure anything will be in your budget).

  • I would rec Crate & Barrel.  They actually have a lot of decently priced tables.  My DH and I are in the exact same situation as you guys.  We move into our new home in 2 weeks and have no eat in kitchen...only a formal dining room that we plan to make less formal.  We plan on purchasing from the Basque line of dining tables at C&B.  They are on sale thru the end of the year.  Kind of rustic looking, but with clean contemporary lines...and comes in 3 sizes.  They have several others that are around $1k as well.  GL!
  • I would check out Bassett off Fields Ertel.  You can design your own table there.  Also, I have bought furniture from Furniturelandsouth.com in North Carolina.  You just call and give them the manufacturer number and they will give you a price including shipping.  Many of my friends have done this also when they have found furniture at stores in Cincinnati.  A couple of nice manufacturers are Lane, and Stanley.
  • We also got our eat in kitchen table at Ikea. It's black and seats six without the leaves. IT comes with two leaves and expands to seat 10. We also got our chairs there...they are black with a beige microfiber padded seat. I LOVE it all and it's held up perfectly.

  • I was actually going to suggest Woodcraft until I saw you mentioned it in your post. What location did you visit? We got a very nice formal dining set - seats 12, 6' square table plus two leaves, and 12 chairs - for well under $1000. We got to choose the leg design and the finish.

Did you only look at the floor models or did you look through all of their design books?

  • I was going to recommend Ashley (we got our table there) but I see you already went there.

How about Ikea or the American Matress Freight (name???) it's on the corner of 747 and Mulhauser. We looked there before Ashley and liked there selection but we were looking for something really specific (we wanted a pub height black table with a leaf that could seat 8)

  • We just bought our new table (and it comes tomorrow!) from Furniture Row, in Florence.  We saw the exact same table at Furniture Fair, but much cheaper!  We ended up with a counter height table, and a butterfly leaf (which means it is self stored inside the table) and 8 stools for around $1100...but I think with 4 stools it was only $780. They usually have good financing deals too.
