Toronto Nesties - my friend requires your assistance...again! lol

Can you possibly help? See her message below!

Hey chickey...
Can you ask your wonderful Torontonian friends a question for me? I'm torn between hotels. I was going to stay at the Cosmopolitan, because it's closest to the meet and greet (at C'est What, on Front St. E.) and the reception (at The Stone Distillery on Mill street) but am wondering if it's too far from the mall (For the love of all that's good... the mall!)?

Sutton Place is closer to the mall and it's cheaper (about $30 a night cheaper, which isn't a big deal... although that's extra shopping money...weee!) but then I'm wondering if it's too far from the venues? Does one take a cab to get around downtown or is there relaitvely easy transit? (I ask because I watched an episode of Doc Zone yesterday that said Toronto's transit blows goat balls).

Other options include (they're all about the same price)... The suites at 1 King West; The Strathcona; The Sheratin and the Fairmont.

Lastly... the receoption is north at Edwards Gardens. I was going to opt out (to go shopping) since the invite says there's no seating and it will be a short ceremony so people shouldn't feel obligated to attend.... and it seems a tad out of the way. Any thoughts? Particularly regarding transportation. As much as I enjoy buses in party dresses and high heels and expensive cab rides for 15minutes of nuptuals...

She forgot this...

Oh... one last thing... the brunch on Sunday is way the hell over in the Italian (?) district, on Florence Street (off Dufferin). Is there a good way to get there from Downtown? Cab? Bus? Train thingie? Metro? Hitch hiking?

Re: Toronto Nesties - my friend requires your assistance...again! lol

  • I have never stayed at a hotel in Toronto seeing as I live here, but I can give some input regarding transit.

C'est What is walkable from Union Station (10 minutes or so). There is a bus from Union Station which goes to the Distillery district (where the Reception is at the Stone Distillery) but she will have to walk about 1-2 blocks from the nearest bus stop into the distillery, and it runs along the Esplanade which is a block south of Front. The transit is actually very good in Toronto however subways don't go everywhere.

I am not sure which "mall" she is referring to, perhaps the Eatons Centre which is on Yonge Street between Queen and Dundas, there is a subway station at each end. so if she stays at any hotel near a subway station, she could easily get to "the mall". Also there is a street car running along King so she could take the streetcar to the Yonge subway line... or take the street car and get off at Yonge and just walk the 2 blocks north to the eaton's centre.

Edwards Gardens does seem very out of the way and would need to take a bus to get there, although it does look like a quick bus ride from a subway... Depends if you want to do all that for a 15 minute ceremony. Maybe she can find someone else to split a cab with (from the subway, if she wants to save money). The pics I found online look beautiful though.

Tell your friend to check out the full PDF transit map at http://www3.ttc.ca/images/fixedImages/TTCRideGuide.pdf The subway lines are the Yellow U, the Green line (below the green within the U I would consider the downtown core) and the purple line. With that transit map and google she should be able to map everything on there and figure out where she wants to go.

  • That's a great hotel and super close the mall (10 minutes max walking). If anything it's a bit futher to the Distillery, she'll want to take a cab there from the hotel (depending on her outift). She's close to C'est What too.

Sutton Place is probably the same distance to the mall walking, but it's much closer to Bloor St which offers some fun shopping - it has "higher end" stores (aside the winners!), but it would make walking to the other two locations difficult and (again depending on outfit) I would cab it - but I don't walk distances in my good shoes.

As for getting to/from Edward Gardens - cab for sure. And it's quite the hike for a 15 minute ceremony. Not that it's far, but it'll be 25ish minutes (pending traffic) one way. There are only buses when you get out that way, and I'm just not a huge believer in our transit system outside of the downtown core becuase they take FOREVER!

The subway is great, your friend can for sure use it to get from Sutton to Front St (take yonge line south to Union), but no subway to mill st... cab or bus would be the best bet. Our transit website is http://www3.ttc.ca/ so that might help her out.

Other good shopping is Queen St which is closer to the Cosmo... go west of University on Queen. She could take the Queen St Streetcar West to University and get off there...or walk the 4 blocks. It's my fav area to shop, the street goes on and on with great boutique-y places and bigger names too.

    Sorry that was so long!

  • You guys rock! That's muchly. I told her that she owes you a drink Drinks
  • btw your friend has no concept of distances.. Italian district is not "way the hell" far away LOL. I live at least triple that distance from the distillery district. It looks like it's about half way between Queen and Dundas, just off Dufferin and she has many options, depending where she is coming from. She could take the Subway to the Dufferin stop then take a bus south, or take a Queen or Dundas streetcar from the Queen/Osgoode or Dundas/St Patrick subway stations. There are streetcars running along Queen, King, Dundas, and College (just to name a few).
  • a super helpful website is www.myttc.ca

which allows you to put in where you're going from/to and it will tell you the public transit routes to take, and approximately how long they take.
