Engineers or those with knowledge of hyraulics?

My sis and BIL are working on a hydraulic system to power a dumper for the rear beds of pick-up trucks...and are having some issues working out the kinks in the mechanism. I need someone to bounce some stuff off of...maybe get a few tips to make it all work. Anyone, anyone. Bueller, Bueller?

Re: Engineers or those with knowledge of hyraulics?

  • for the right price!!! just kidding... I'd have to pick up a book to re-learn stuff to help your IL's so I don't think I can help much!

  • Sorry but I am in the same boat as MN4L.  Electronics, thermodynamics or aerodynamics and I could help, but otherwise it would be a crap shoot.
  • What are the kinks that they are experiencing?
  • They're using an under body scissor lift to lift a dumper insert for the back of a truck bed (think removable dump truck for weekend warriors). The arms on the front lift up and the cylinder goes in and out but they can't seem to get the bottom (scissor) to lift. They are not sure why and are thinking they need to install some kind of hinge. It's not a big hoist, just needs to lift about 6000 lbs. They aren't sure if they can work with what they've got or if they should start from scratch.
  • The scissor lift would only move the truck bed up & down, and it sounds like they want to tilt it?? they would definitely need something else to make it work. a hinge + hydraulics sound good. But then again, I might be picturing something totally different.
  • Yep, they want it to tilt. She's sending me pics tonight...I'll post them and pick your brains some more! lol

ETA: I just got off the phone with her. She says that the cylinder comes out and hits a pivot which is supposed to then pull the arms up but they need it to pull the arms up right away (she describes that instead of coming "out and up" and they need it to "straight up". As they have it built right now, the arms will come up but it will not pull up the bottom part.  Picture a "Z", it's only making the top half of the Z, not the bottom half.

Here's a link to the design they are trying to re-create:

  • oh how my engineering degree has failed me... I have no clue Mel. But I hope they can figure it out!!!

Tell them to post it on fb, you would be surprised how many people you are friends with have hidden talents and interests, you never know who may have the idea that will figure it out for them!

  • You may want to suggest a mechanically inclined friend to go for a visit... I am not very good at picturing what you're describing.. .and since the link you provided is what their goal is, and i'm not sure what their current situation is, it would be difficult to make a suggestion. Good luck to them!
