How many of you ladies have banked your LO's cord blood?
If you have with what organization did you use?
DH and I were discussing it and it seems like a hefty amount of money up front; but the long term benefits seem worth it.
Thoughts and Opinions welcome
Re: Cord Blood question
We decided not to do it. The up-front cost seemed high, and the likelihood of using it seemed low.
The nurse who did our prenatal class gave us two interesting tidbits of info on the subject: 1) she estimated that about 10 percent of couples do; and 2) it's most useful for mixed race couples, as it is more difficult to find matches in those cases.
I don't remember if I've discussed it with DH... but I think we'd do it. Cancer is very prevalent in his family (and a little in mine too), even childhood cancer... so I think the potential benefits would outweigh the costs.
We did it. We used Create Cord Blood Bank in Toronto. We paid $925 or something like that for the first year, and each subsequent year is $115. We also had to pay a courier to send everything overnight to Toronto (we are in Windsor)
Let me know if you want more information - I can get you a free year of storage with a referral.

They are still very early on in the research process with cord blood/stem cells. My OB told me that it works 100% for cancers. Other things (like Parkinsons, etc) are not yet proven, but show promise. My mother has early onset dementia, which could be hereditary, so we wanted to cover our bases, just in case.
I did see a special recently that was talking about how if your LO has cancer, they may not be able to use their OWN cord blood (if the cancer is genetic), but could use a siblings.
I also heard what Pamela mentioned that in a lot of cases if something is wrong with your LO they can't use their own cord blood but can use their siblings. I also read that the storage process has not been "perfected" to ensure that the quality of the cord blood is maintained.
We did not keep his cord blood. If we had a history of illness in our family then we probably would have done it.
