Square Footage?

I was just on the D&R board and they did a post on sq footage. It seems like most of the ladies have over 1800 sq feet and they all want bigger homes when they have kids. Oh and this sq footage doesn't include the huge basements they have.

We have about 1770sqft and even with the 4 of us plus dog we have more than enough room. We could use more storage but once we buy some hutches and armoires we will have that covered. And even if we had a 3rd kid, we will still have enough room.

How much sq ft do you ladies have? Need more? Need less?

Re: Square Footage?

  • We have 2000sf with 3 bedrooms and 2.5 baths.  We have a bonus room though that helps A LOT!  Kinda wish we had more storage too.  If (and that's a HUGE if) we decide to have another baby, we have the room (we'd just lose our guest room).   I don't think I could go much smaller though...

  • We have alomst 2300sf.  4 bedrooms and 2.5 baths,  The only thing that is crazy here is the master bedroom is GIGANTIC, they could have used that space somewhere else.  otherwise it is perfect.  I would never want anything else bigger (though I though I did).  But this is perfect!
  • We have a 1500 sq ft 2 bdrm 2.5 bath condo with 1 car garage and we need more space. Its already a bit crowded with 2 of us and a dog so I know there's no way we'd be comfortable here if we had a kid. If we had a yard it might make it easier but we only have a patio. Storage is def a huge issue for us too and I wish I could find a better solution to our storage problems then shoving everything in the garage or guest room closet.
  • It's all about the layout!! I have 2000 sq feet and could use a little more room in the great room. But other than that. I love the size of our house. I would never go bigger. Too much to clean.

  • We only have about 1150 sq. ft. (1950's house), but it's actually GOOD because it forces us to purge our cr@p every couple months, stay super oganized, and we store Costco 'stock-up' products (like tissue, dishwasher soap etc.) in the garage.

We'd love more room, but we're not willing to leave Claremont... and it's just the two of us so it's OK for now.

  • It's definitely all about the layout.  We are in 1,700 sqft now, but when we buy in a couple years, I would like to have 2,300+.

  • We have 1500 square feet, but with the way our house is set up we feel like we need more.
  • we have about 1700-1750 sq ft in our condo. The bedrooms, not including master, are not very big though, so once we have two kids we plan to move to a house. But we don't necessarily want a ton more square feet....just bigger bedrooms and a linen closet. OUr sq. footage is all in the downstairs....a HUGE kitchen and two large living rooms.

Also, while the kitchen has TONS of storage, and each bedroom has a closet (walk in in master and in one other bedroom), we don't have much storage. There is no linen closet of any kind! We store sheets and towels in the gues bedroom closet right now.

  • We have 2000 sq ft 3 br 2 bath and are planning on adding on two more bedrooms and a bath in the future.

It is about how your sq ft are laid out. We have on bedroom upstairs with a loft and the other two bedrooms are downstairs. I don't feel comfortable with the idea of sleeping upstairs while my kids are down or vice versa. I want to be on the same floor. I would have nightmares that someone could break in and take the kids and I would be all the way on the other side of the house and have no idea.

Right now P's nursery is in the upstairs br and we sleep in the loft. It's not perfect but it works for now.

When we are done we will have three bedrooms upstairs and one guest room downstairs. The other guest room downstairs (that my niece lives in now) will be converted into a large family room/playroom. Now all we have to do is come up with the money for all of it. ;)

I also can't wait to have real closets. I guess closets weren't as needed in 1903. We never have enough space for stuff.

  • The one we're about to buy is around 1350 sq ft, 3 bed 2 bath. The plan is to stay there a while and someday upgrade, but it's fine for now. And like some one said, it forces us to have less crap!
  • We have 1772 sq ft 4 bdrm 2 bath.  It's too small.  Our master bedroom and bath are tiny.  The kitchen is small as well.  Those two areas need more sq footage and I'd be happy.

We have a 1355 sq. ft. condo with 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. It definitely is about the layout. Our living room and kitchen are pretty big and the rooms are decent size. It's perfect for now, but I think once we have another LO it will be crammed. We want to be here at least another 5 years, though.

And we're the same with our Costco stuff. It gets stored in the garage until we need it. And I have sold a lot of our junk on ebay and donated the rest to Goodwill often.

  • We upgraded from 1225 sq ft to 1660 sq ft and I really think the 1660 is perfect for us, but that's me thinking that with no kids. I'm sure one or two kids will really change that. I hated living in the 1225 sq ft one because of the layout. It was so closed off that it was clastraphobic (so what if I can't spell?). The house we're in now has higher ceilings, is really open and has lots of natural light which I think makes a huge difference. Also, we have a three car garage. That is a blessing because instead of parking on the single car side, MH has his man stuff there, so there's his tools, his drums an amp and some other stuff. We also have a huge kitchen, a linen cupboard in the guest bathroom and a hallway type closet. I think if anything, I'll want more storage space but we have a slab of concret in the back just waiting to have a shed put on it so that will solve that problem.

Living in the smaller place forced us to purge a lot of stuff which we still do and that's a nice habit to have I think.

Kat, I'm with you on the space idea. We don't really need much more.

  • It all depends on the layout.  We used to live in a 1700 sq ft home and each  of the living areas was so small we couldn't fit more than 5 people into them. Seriously.  I'm getting married and our family is now growing. We bought a 3200 sq ft. home, but for a low price (finally home prices fell low enough here!).  We love the space.
