Teachers...I need advice!

I'm going into my last year of school at XU for my Master's degreen in Education.  This is a total career change for me, so I've got to take the Praxis exams this Fall.

Any teachers that can give me some tips to prepare?  Or just calm my nerves?  I haaaate taking these kinds of tests.  It's never been my strength.  The website obviously offers some study guides ($30 for each test, and I'm taking 2).  I'm curious if they are worth the money and if they'd really help get me ready for the tests.

Thanks for any tips/advice you can provide!!

Re: Teachers...I need advice!

  • Really, IMO, it's a piece of cake.  You will be fine!  I read over course notes when I took mine and that's about it.  I got to the test and people were spread out cramming at the last minute.  There were a few people who said it was their second time so I started to worry, but it ended up just fine.

Review the major concepts, such as different models of education, different theorists, major benchmarks, state standards, etc.  What area of education are you going to be in?  Also, I think if you go to Half Price books (or regular book store) you can find a study guide book aimed towards Praxis.

  • Well, that makes me feel a little better!  Thank you! Big Smile

I'm actually doing Early Childhood Education (K-3).  I looked over the some practice tests online and some of the questions seemed so easy.  I'm definitely going to check out some bookstores for some study guides!

  • I took the Praxis a long time ago (I think in '96), and it wasn't hard at all. The English pedagogy test was an essay exam, then there was a multiple choice English and literature section, and finally a multiple choice general teaching/classroom management type of test (this one was ridiculously simple).

I don't know your area of expertise, but if you know your content, you'll be fine. And the general teaching part was just common sense. I wouldn't spend too much on test prep materials. Maybe check the library?

    I wrote this!
  • You'll be totally fine.  You will notice that the practice questions are very similar to the real questions on the test.  :)
  • You'll be fine.  Are you taking the PRAXIS I or II?  I stressed out about them for no reason either!  GL!
