CDN cheque ok in Europe?

So here's the situation...

DH and I only found out today (like 15 min ago) that a cousin of mine is getting married in Portugal this Saturday. [nice, huh? that's another story]

The good news is that I have family going there this Sunday so they can bring over the 'congratulations gift'. DH say we should send it later on due to the fact that we didn't know about it!!!

We were not expecting this gift and honestly don't have the extra $ laying around and I'm not touching MY savings for her...baby comes first. I was wondering if I write her a cheque in CAD$ will she be able to cash it there?

Re: CDN cheque ok in Europe?

  • My parents have sent relatives money to Portugal several times.  I'll check with them tomorrow and get back to you with an answer.  I'm pretty sure that the banks there will do foreign exchange just like they do here though.
  • Some US banks will hassle people or refuse to cash Canadian cheques.

I would just get a card that says congrats.  You could offer dinner when they come back/visit (I'm not clear if they're living there or just decided to get married there)

  • Maybe you could send a money order in Euro funds instead. If they leave Saturday then you still have tomorrow to get to the bank and have one done up.

My mom did this when my cousin got married in England.  I think its safer to do it this way than just a personal cheque

  • Don't know specifics about Portugal so it might work there but I do know that foreign cheques and money orders do not work at all in Sweden. With that in mind I would make sure their bank in Portugal would accept a money order before I sent one.

If it was me I would probably just give cash.

  • If you have family going, you could go to the bank and take out Euros and have your family hand deliver the card/cash.

But if you don't want to deplete your savings then don't! They didn't tell you about the wedding nor invite you, you don't have to feel obligated to giving them money.

  • If you can, try to send it in US funds...i've had trouble cashing Cdn even in small German towns where they are exchanging everything else
  • Thanks Ladies!

Yea, this is where I kinda stand right now...I do want to send a gift but I'll be better prepared for it next week and it'll be "Late" but...She didn't care enough to let me know about the wedding so why should I care enough to send a gift? [sigh] I hate playing these games...

I'll see what I can do Big Smile

Lisa, I checked with my mom and she agreed with this .  She said that sometimes it is very hard to find a bank or post office(depending on the town/city) that will exchange CND funds.Usually onlt the bigger cities there will do it and it can sometimes get complicated.

Even though you are not suppose to, she always sends Euro cash, that she has already exchanged here, through the mail.  If your relatives are able to take it for you on Saturday then it will get there safely.

  • If you don't want to deplete your account right now, my suggestion is instead of sending them cash you can send them an actual gift like a picture frame or even a nice album.  This way it will always be cheaper than the actual amount of money you would have given them but at least it will be something meaningful, if that makes sense.

That's actually what I did with my cousin in Italy.  Because it was going to cost a lot to send 100 Euros, I sent with my parents a beautiful sterling silver picture frame that I had actually gotten as a wedding gift while I was in Italy.  Because it was something I would never use and I knew it would something she would like, I decided to regift it. (i know that's bad but oh well...lol.  Fortunately, these cousins are on the other side of the family so no one will ever find out).  At the end of the day, I didn't have to deplete my account right now, and my cousin got something that she can remember always.

    HTH!

  • oooooooooo.....thats a good idea! I too got a picture frame in silver that's not my taste at all! Maybe that + a little something else?

    Thanks for the idea Dani!

BTW - It's great seeing you on here! XOXO
