Anyone decorated a cake using fondant?
I'm thinking of trying this for DD's bday cake, but am scared.
How hard is it?
TIA!
Re: Anyone decorated a cake using fondant?
I made a cake for my sister's wedding. I think I got a little in over my head because the fondant was difficult for me to roll it out as thin as i needed to. My husband had to help out a lot. It looked reallllly nice, but it was harder than i thought!
I will find a picture and post
Here is how it turned out:

I'm a cake decorator. If you've never used fondant, take a class. It's not really hard per se, but it's not at all the same as buttercream. If you know the basics of decorating, take the level 3 class. It's beginning fondant.
Do you have an idea of what you want for DDs birthday?

gianfavi - great job! especially for your first try!

different colors, but you get the idea. Different cake topper too, but that doesn't really have anything to do with fondant. LOL.
That is a really simple design. Have you ever done a stacked cake before? It's actually really similar to the first cake in the level 3 class (very, very helpful!!) If you want, leave me your email and I can walk you through it. You can PM me too.

hiya..
I love baking, but I would hardly say I am a professional. When it came time for me and my hubby to get married, we found ourselves ina predicament with the wedding cake.. we needed it to be vegan, and any another flavor than the yucky walnut bready stuff some professionals tried to convince us were are only options. we went to a place highly recommended by the vegan community and did a tasting. horrible! and pricey. at that moment i knew i would have to bake it myself.. i did chocolate with "buttercream"-earth balance icing in the inside, and fondant on the ouside. I had never used fondant before.. and although those who like to charge out the ying yang for a wedding cake will say that its difficult, etc etc.. and to not try it at home- it literally was easier than frosting a cake. granted, having a proper rolling pin, fondant smoother, and for the underlying buttercream- use a turntable and icing knife- really maes the difference.
please dont be intimidated!! its simple! I have fondanted many a cakes..just wrk fairly quicly and watch the demos on youtube. seriously.. its a huge scam what some bakers charge for a mediocre cake.. it can be done..
my then finance and i decorated it together and it turned out yummy and pretty decent looking.. for our first attempt!
