Broken Ankle :o(

So DH works in the mental health unit at a local hospital and was attacked by a patient last night. A scuffle ensued and he ended up with a broken ankle!!! The orthopedist says surgery on Monday when the swelling goes down. Yikes!

Any suggestions for something to keep him occupied for next 6-10 weeks until he can be back on his feet again?

Re: Broken Ankle :o(

  • Video games?  Laptop?  DVDs?  If he's a reader, books/magazines?

That just sucks - I'm sorry for your DH (and you!).  My DH completely blew out his ACL last fall and had surgery back in February and it was tough keeping him off of it post-surgery... he just doesn't have the patience to deal with sitting around, and I didn't have the patience to deal with trying to keep him down!  I did my best to keep him set up on our living room couch, where he at least had access to his beloved toys - Xbox 360, flat-screen, etc.  I also set up a small table beside the sofa with his laptop and other essentials.  He basically lived off of the sofa for a week or two, then was more mobile with his crutches/walking by himself.

GL to both of you with handling the upcoming weeks & speedy recovery to your DH!

  • Oh my gosh, thats terrible. Best wishes for his recovery!

I second the laptop and video games. My DH likes comics too, if he isn't much a of reader he may like those.

  • Oh no! That really stinks!

Do you have Netflix? If not you could subscribe. We pay $15 a month for unlimited movies, 3 at a time. We make a list of what we want to say. When we finish watching we send one back and get a new one. This may help keep him busy.

  • Oh no, that sucks.  I hope he can recover quickly!  Lots of movies, games, video games, books, magazines, puzzles, and website searching might help.  Maybe he can think of a few projects that he can do to stay engaged and productive but in one place, like organizing things.

  • Ditto the other suggestions...dvd's, video games, laptop, anything he likes to read.  I hope surgery goes well and that his recovery is quick and smooth!
  • I think everyone has had some great suggestions. My DH was kept busy with books, computer games, movies and puzzles. I actually even got his old school Nintendo from his parents house so he had fun playing Duck Hunt :)
  • Thanks for the suggestions ladies! The people he works with got him a gift subscription to netflix (which was very kind of them) and we have books, laptop & a PS3. I told him if he gets bored we will teach him to knit & he can make Christmas presents for our families, haha.

It just really sucks for him to be cooped up the rest of the summer. No more Yankees games this year (we had tickets to their series in Baltimore in 1.5 weeks) and we will miss most of PSU football home games. He is really very bummed.

Surgery Monday, send your positive thoughts :0)
