I do not get men.......

My boss just called me about a project that I am working on (he is based in Montreal) and suddenly jumped topics to my pregnancy.

He said that he assummed I would be off work in October some time to which I responded that no, the baby isn't due until the end of December and I will be working almost until the end.

He then proceeds to say "So you will be off for about 3 - 4 months right?  Since there will still be customer issues to be handled while you are off you will need to think of a contingency plan" at which point he had to rush to another meeting.

I realise that he is originally from our parent company in Conneticut but;

  1. I have the option to take almost a year off
  2. I really won't care about the customer issues.  We have a big enough company, someone else can handle them.

He is married with no children but seriously....... Tongue Tied

Re: I do not get men.......

  • I work with a lot of Americans in my job, they just can't grasp a year off.  Seriously, they don't seem to get it at all.  The idea of hiring a contractor as a replacement, not contacting someone for a year, they just have some sort of mental block regardless of how often we explain it to them.  Like they think the last person was an exception.
  • silly people! he needs to learn the Canadian rules.
  • That's so weird. I have seen that mindset on the American boards, though- people who can't get their minds around one year. Someone actually told me once that she couldn't imagine working at a job that was so pointless that she could leave for a year and leave her job undone during that time. She couldn't believe that someone would be hired for a one-year contract to do her job.

  • I on the otherhand keep reminding my boss that we need someone to be hired so I can start training them by November the latest. His response "aren't you due end of January" Well yes but if the baby wan'ts to come out in December I can't stop it! (hopefully not)

He then tells me that they're only going to POST the job opening Mid-to-end of September. It took them 6 moths to find ME for this job and they seem to think it would be easier when it's a 1yr contract? Tongue Tied And I do all the monthly billings at the end of each month, how can I properly train someone if I only have 2 months to show them that + everything else I do??...

Yikes..All I know I that when this baby is out - Don't call me for 1 yr!

  • The best part is that I have been on a special project for almost the last year so I really only have 1 customer that I share with another person.

It's actually perfect timing since my project will be done in the next 3 months and there is a lot of "little" things that need to be done for our group if I need more work.

  • I hear ya... just today my dad commented on my lack of time and work in the office. he asked (feciously) if he needs to hire someone else to work here. I didn't have the guts (nor alternate income) to say yes... please... I prefer to have time with my kids instead of being here.

luckily you have the government on your side, Heather.

  • Do you think you'll take the full year this time! If I remember correctly when your son was born your husband ended up taking some time. Which is cool if that works best for your family - it would suck if you went back before you were ready/wanting to.
  • I have the government on my side but not company politics.

My DH will be taking 2 months off again but last time I went back after 7 months and I don't know if I want to do that again.  We'll see.

  • You'd think your boss would be up to date on HR policies, eh?
