My growing up house closes Friday

We moved there the day before grade 9 started, it was my grandparents' house before that... they built it in the early 40s, and where my dad and his siblings were raised. ?When I was in University my grandma moved back in with us for care until she died. ?

The only "thing" about the house for me are the sour cherry trees in the backyard, and I am getting the smaller one of the two delivered to me on Saturday. ?I think my parents are a bit hurt that I wasn't rushing to visit the house one last time, or put up any sort of fuss about the sale. ?

Their new house is lovely, but in a crazy rural area where we don't know anyone else. ?It's all just strange yet boring. ?Maybe I'll be more melancholy on Saturday when I know it's really gone?

Re: My growing up house closes Friday

  • It's interesting how emotionally attached some people are to homes and property. It's different for your parents, likely, b/c they've had a much longer history with it than you have. I think it's sweet that you are taking one of the trees. It'll be a lasting reminder of the house for you and your family.
  • My childhood house sold a few years back, I wasn't really that sad, but I do miss it over holidays and other occasions when we all used to be together there. For the most part though I don't really care.

Although I will say going to my parents new house has never felt like "home" since I never lived there. Oh well... that's life I guess!

I think it's cool you're getting one of the trees!

Glad you are getting one of the trees. Boooo to the house selling.

    ?

I generally don't like to talk about that business online, but that house closes next Tuesday. ?It's like a real estate tornado around here. ?

    :P?

  • lol @ Jen...

I love that you took one of the trees, that's a great way to keep the house with you!

I think I'd be sad if my parents ever sell the house they are in now... but I can understand being not as attached as your parents are, esp your dad. What a history to be leaving.

  • Will you be transferring any *plants* from your grow op house as well? LOL

I still occasionally drive by the house I grew up in - when I'm in the area (not so often anymore). I miss it, but not exceedingly. We moved when I was 17, so I have a lot of memories in my parents' current house too.

And I'm with Sarah, it's gotta be tough on your dad with all that family history in the house.
