New study about induced labour and C-Section

Re: New study about induced labour and C-Section

  • What happened to the formatting on this page? Is it really weird for anyone else?

  • hmm interesting. I have two friends who were induced and ended up with emerg C/S. But then again I have friends who were induced and had labour/delivery naturally with no issues.

Yeah, Lisah the formatting is messed up on this page for sure

I'm seeing this post set up strange too.

Everyone I know who has been induced has ended up with a c-section, including myself.  I believe that when you are induced, you're body is not naturally ready to deliver so the baby never drops or you never dialate properly/quickley enough to have a natural birth.

  • This is very interesting, all 6 women who I know of that were induced also needed Emerg. C/section...One was 3 weeks ago and one was 17 yrs ago!

This is why I wish I could just skip the induction and IF I'm overdue just schedule the c-section anyways....BUT like Nattie said there are the 'few' cases that go natural...and natural is a better recovery then the c-section.

We'll see whan I get there!

  • I was induced at 41 weeks exactly, with no progress, and delivered vaginally about 42 hours later. (Not much happened during the first 26 hours with just cervidil.) I bet if you ask on the 0-6 months board, you'll find quite a lot more than a few who were induced and didn't end up requiring a c-section.

But the study is about women who are induced at 41 weeks vs. waiting longer until it happens naturally. A certain percentage of those who had a c-section after induction would also have required a c-section if they waited for it to happen naturally.

Induction wasn't the labour experience I'd hoped for, but it did the job...

  • I was flat out told that my labour would end in a c-section. ?That if I was induced the chances of me delivering vaginally were small but if it's what I wanted he would do it. We actually talked about it a long time and I decided to skip the induction altogether and am very glad I did. ?According to the doctor after Scarlett was born, it would have been physically impossible for me to deliver vaginally. ?Scarlett would never have fit down the birth canal. ?As it was she was born blue and had a low apgar score. ?

Now if I could only get the rest of the world at large to believe that and stop emailing me articles about un-necessary c-sections. ?I HAD AN 11LBS BABY PEOPLE!!! I may be a little heavy but I am actually a small person cut me some slack! ?They treat me like I cheated because it was elective. ?I'm sorry if I decided to skip endangering my child by going into labour and having an emergency c/s.... Can you tell I am a little frustrated about this??

I can't believe you get comments about this.  Doctors won't do a C/S for the sake of convenience.  Clearly your Dr thought it was necessary.  Obviously he didn't go to the same med school as those who feel the need to send you emails ;)

  • At the start of the induction I would have been able to deliver Ben vaginally but sometime during the labour he moved positions and started to try and come through my cervix with the side of his head. Also my body never went into labour. It was the oxytocin doing all the work. So I would have never been able to deliver him vaginally. The MW and OB said that I would have been there for weeks.

I do think that some doctors rush things and don't let you try and deliver vaginally. This was not the case for me and I am thankful that our MW let us go to 42w to let labour start naturally and when it didn't that she let me labour for as long as possible before it became obvious that something was wrong with me and Ben.

  • All of the girls in my family who have had babies recently have gone natural all the way.  My one cousin has had four children naturally and the other two cousins are on their second babies.  One even had to have the doctor go in there with his hands to pull the baby out because the baby was stuck in the canal (her story scares the crap out of me btw)  So they kind of all think I cheated by knowing the date and time of my delivery I guess.  But I keep reminding them that she was 11 lbs and the largest of their babies was 6bs.

I was induced and had the easiest labor ever.  I started getting contractions less than an hour after the gel was inserted and dialated properly.  I think it has less to do with an induction and more to do with an individual's body and how they tolerate labour.

  • I was induced with a pitocin drip and delivered vaginally and without medication. Maybe my body was just in a better mindset to deliver, maybe it's my childbearing hips, maybe William was already on his way to being born so the pitocin just got my system on its way. Who knows. It was tough for sure. But my labour was also short (only 8 hours total from the start of the drip).

I think the fact I didn't get the epidural helped things move along more quickly than normal because I know the staff were shocked how quickly i moved along and also shocked I didn't want the epidural as they've never seen anyone who had the drip do it sans medication before. (Although I'm sure there have been others..just maybe not too many). I believe the epidural can slow down your labour as you relax etc. But i'm not an expert.

I was very hesitant to get induced as I really didn't want a c-section, but things worked out anyway in the end and I got the natural medication free birth I wanted..other than the extra oxytocin I suppose.

I think things happen as they happen and really as long as the baby is born safe and sound, that's really all that matters. :-)
