My basement's flooded

D just called.  The furnace room is completely flooded and has spread out into the finished/carpeted area.  He has no idea where the water's coming from.  The water heater looks fine, there's no water near the washer.  Lovely.

I'm guessing it has to be the water heater - there's nothing else in there and it would be pretty obvious if it was a leaking pipe.

We rent our water heater - so if it is that, are they respponsible for the damage?

EDITED:

It's something from the AC - where it connects to the furnace.  I have no idea. D is checking it out and think he knows how to fix it - something is blocked off.

Who knows how long it's been leaking for.  Hopefully there's no mold in the carpet.  Aside from how dangerous it is in general, I'm extremely allergic to mold, so the carpet will need to be replaced if that's the case.

Re: My basement's flooded

  • FACK. That sucks huge. I'm sorry about that. :(

I think it's the responsibility of the lender if it's a structural damage to the heater under warranty or also if it's an install error. Not entirely sure. My SIL is in insurance so I can always ask her what the scoop is.

  • That sucks! I hate those stupid, we need to do this now repairs.

I hope D can fix it & that there is no mold! What a pain

  • We had this happen about a month ago too. Insurance first said that it came from a window, which we later found out isn?t the case so they sent another adjuster and he says it?s a foudantion crack (Also not covered). Funny that since the last 6 major rain storms no water came in but that ONE-magical time it did??? Yes we have called in again?.

Anyways, it also was in our storage room which was carpeted. With in 2 days mold started to grow and quick! DH removed all the carpet and 4 feet down to the ground of drywall & insulation. I?m not sure if it matters how much water is there but in my recent experience mold grows quickly.

I wasn?t allowed in the basement (DH) so guess who did all the laundry!? [Mr. ?I don?t know how to do it??] I loved that part?LOL

It really does suck BIG time?good luck!

What a pain.  I hope this doesn't end up costing you an arm and a leg.  :(

  • We had that happen once when our A/C pipes outside froze when we worked the a/c too hard (tried to cool down the house too far, too fast). Luckily, once we thawed and cleaned everything up, it was fine.

Once you clean everything up, I would pull up the carpets and use lots of fans and dehumidifiers. Also, clean the regular floors/walls with a vinegar rinse and then a TSP/water mixture to prevent mold/mildew.

That blows. Being a responsible adult sucks sometimes.

  • That really bites. We've had a ton of rain and storms in our area and last month we had a leak in our laundry room, and were under water.

I hope your DH can fix everything up for you, and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

  • oh no... I hope it doesn't ruin anything. my parent's bsmt floods often enough, but its from their sump pump when there is a heavy rain or melt.

hope it doesn't cost lots too, to fix it.

  • That sucks! Water is brutal, it can get places you'd never think of! Our a/c leaked 2 years ago and we had to have it replaced. Unfortunately the a/c unit was located on the roof and the water had nowhere to go but down! We didn't know it was leaking until I came hom one day and the ceiling in my downstairs hall had fallen to the floor! BIG mess. Hopefully the damage to your place is minimal. If you are concerned about mold there are companies that can come and test it for you.
  • No good! Hopefully no mold and easily fixable.

All you ladies are giving me nightmares about owning a home right as we start house hunting!
