Question about ordering from US

I'm tempted to buy some BumGenius online.  There's a sale that comes to $14 per diaper and shipping to Canada is $15.  But, I'm wondering what kind of duty I'm looking at for either a $100 or $200 order.  Any idea?

Re: Question about ordering from US

  • Could be very very scary.  My mom paid 2.5 times the price for a few of DD's birthday gifts.  :(

One option...  I've had stuff sent to a friend in the States... which she reshipped to me as a 'gift'. (I wasn't intentionally trying to avoid duty et al... The company just didn't ship to Canada.)

This. Duty is a tonne! The least amount I have paid in duty, for an item in the mail, is 25% of the cost. Some I have paid double for.

You'd have better luck to drive over to the store and bring it back yourself. Every time I have done that, and mentioned it was for a baby, they have waved me across.

  • The best way to go is to ship to someone in the US and have them reship as a gift with a $20 value.

You just never know if you'll get caught on the duty or not, we find it pretty hit and miss when A orders from eBay.

  • I've paid about $80 in duty for a $200 order from the States, other times I've paid nothing, it really is hit and miss.

  • It's a risk that's for sure. You never know when it gets to the border. Sometimes it's no problem, and other times you get hit with the duty. If you have someone in the US you can ship it to - do it. I don't know if I'd want to risk paying who knows what in duty for the item.
