WDYT?

I have a bias here, so I need to know if I'm out of line.

Say someone had a dog for 13 years...it's always kind of growled and snapped at people, but it wasn't ever completely viscious.  This is also a chiuaua (sp?) so it's not a giant dog that will rip your arm off.  The owner of the dog meets someone, they start planning their wedding and want to go on a week-long HM.  They decide to give the dog up to the humane society b/c of both the snapping and the fact that they're going to be OOT for a week.  Keep in mind, this dog will be out of their lives forever by giving it up.

What do you think of this?  I think it's completely lame...you've had the dog for 13 years, that's plenty of time to train it.  Mike originally told me that they're giving the dog up b/c of the HM but once I started ranting and raving about that, he brought up the snapping/growling thing.

Damn you Nest for screwing up my siggy!

Re: WDYT?

  • Lame.  It sounds to me like they are looking for an excuse not to keep the dog.  But that's so sad because the chances of a 13 year old chihuaua finding a home?  Slim to none!

    exactly this, poor doggy :(

  • This is worse than lame if you ask me, this is irresponsible and makes me so sad, so sad.  Wonder what the fate will be for that poor dog.  :(  They should be ashamed of themselves.
  • Stupid people like really piss me off!  I mean it's 13 years old so it's not like its going to live another 13 years.  Sounds like they are starting a new life and just want to get rid of some of the older no longer fun parts of their life.  Pathetic!

  • Ditto Mandy & Joanna.  This is similar to a situation our friends did (I'll explain in a second.)  Chances are... the dog is going to be euthanized and I would've probably said something fairly snarky to them because small dogs, especially because of their longer life span expectancy, are like committing to a child: ~18 years.  And with that history of being snappy?  It's likely to not make it past the most basic tests to be adopted.  So sad. Crying

The friends similar: they adopted a 5-6 year old beagle, Elvis, when they moved in together a few years ago.  FF to now: they're married, and moved into his sister's house (when she moved out; they're renting it), but they took in her two labs.  VERY well trained dogs, but Elvis is not.  He was abused, seperation anxiety, etc.  He ended up acting out when the labs entered the picture by peeing and pooing wherever he wanted to.

The find out they're pg.  And give Elvis to the humane society. Sad  We all thought he was a goner.  (And friends tried to milk it for sympathy on how they cried all the way home for giving him up because he couldn't be trusted with a baby, etc.)  Except MIL's friend adopted him!  So we find out word of mouth how Elvis is doing.

And MIL's friend's daughter just had a baby (daughter & baby live with MIL's friend.)  Elvis is doing GREAT with the baby - he's Mr. Protector.  Both MH and I want to be like "Hmmpf!  He can't be trusted with a baby, huh, mo-fvckers?!" Hmm

So hopefully this chihuahua will find a good home like Elvis.

I KNOW!  I was so fvcking pissed last night when Mike told me about it...he was going off too, but I couldn't get over it.  2 hours later I was still steaming over it.  I even offered to take the dog in but I guess they already took it to the Humane Society.  At least it's a no-kill shelter, but seriously - WTF?!

I'd have offered to take it in as well.  Maybe you can find out what shelter it's at and see if you can adopt it.

  • Mike's trying to get a hold of the friend to find out.  Even though he's not crazy about getting another dog right now (see Confession post), he's interested in this one...he visited the dog the day the friend brought him home, so Mike's known him his whole life.  And if anyone can re-train a dog, it'll be Mike...Chloe is so amazingly well-behaved.

Cross your fingers.  He left a message for the friend last night and he's going to call the shelters to see if they'll give him any info if he doesn't hear back by noon.

Damn you Nest for screwing up my siggy!
