Please help a DC nestie out - hotels/location

I need some hotel/location help.  DH and I along with 3 other couples are coming to New York for a wedding.  The wedding is on a Sunday so we were going to come up there and site see on Saturday and leave on Monday.  The wedding/reception are in the Bronx but we wanted to site see around time square, shopping, rockefeller center etc.  I was looking online and I can't seem to find a hotel UNDER $300 a night.

What area would you look? We're going to either take the train or the bus from DC so we don't have to drive and then take a taxi to the wedding (or if subway goes there I don't know).

Of the 6 of us going only 1 has ever been to New York and she's not coming up until Sunday morning (the wedding is at 2pm) so on Saturday it'll be 5 people who have NEVER been to NYC.

Suggestions on where to stay, must see things etc would be SO helpful.

Re: Please help a DC nestie out - hotels/location

  • YOu might want to go with a hotel near the wedding (for convenience to the wedding) and then take a train in to Manhattan to sightsee.  This would likely be your most inexpensive option.

In midtown:  There's a holiday inn on 57th between 9th and 10th, should be fine (around $200) and The Buckingham Hotel (onf 57th and 6th is really cool ($260/night)  If you can get a deal at the NY Hilton (on 56th and 6th) it's a great hotel, super user friendly for out of towners.  Or the Millennium.

  • As for what to do, just make a list of the things you know you want to see, that will likely take up more than one day!  With one day to spend, you really won't have time for much "off the beaten track"
  • I've stayed several times at the Sheraton (7th Ave at 51st) and the Radisson (Lexington at 48th) for under $200 a night.  Both were very clean, friendly places and ideally located for sightseeing.

Have you checked Tripadvisor?  You might be able to find an off-brand/boutique hotel for cheaper than the big chains.  Just be sure to read the reviews very carefully...there are a ton of "boutique" hotels in NYC and the quality varies quite a bit, especially around the more touristy areas (ie Times Square/Broadway).

  • i think midtown/times square would be a good place to stay - you might try hotwire.com or priceline to get a better rate. i've done done pretty well on hotwire in baltimore & an upcoming trip to d.c.

you could do top or the rock or the empire state building for some birds eye views. i agree with dnagal that you won't have a lot of time to explore but you could definitely see a few highlights.?

    there was an nyc blog/bio but i don't know the link . . .?

  • I'm a displaced DC nestie now in nyc! :)

I have a blog in my siggie with nyc good eats (and not so) if you want to check it out...

    things to do:

-walk across the brooklyn bridge and have ice cream or go to the jacques torres chocolate shop in brooklyn... you could have pizza there but it's a looong wait.

-the staten island ferry is free and has great views also of the city.  recommend that and walking around wall st and then up to either tribeca or taking the subway/cab to soho for shopping.

-grenwich village. shopping on bleeker and all throughout...

    -rockefeller center/midtown

-you can walk around midtown up to 59th street, head to central park, go to the new 24 hour apple store which is underground, fao shwartz (the piano from big), see the plaza and head to rock center... it's all there :)

have fun! :)  here's my blog in case you want some rec's: www.abroadonbroadway.blogspot.com

  • Thanks for the recommendations.  I just can't believe the prices for hotels.  I thought the DC area was expensive but it's nothing compared to NY.  WOW.

I found 1 hotel (I forgot the name already) with a GREAT price (140/night) but it has a "shared bathroom" so I think I'll keep looking!!
