average child care costs in central PA?

Good evening ladies!

DH and I are not TTC for a few years yet, but i was interested to see if any of you know what some of the average prices for childcare are in PA? I know with what we get paid right now we don't make enough to pay for childcare weekly nor for us to live on one income. So i'm just trying to get some numbers in my head so that as we move forward we'll be more educated.

I know it really depends on where you go and where you live (we live in the lancaster area) so i'm just looking for some averages. it doesn't need to be precise, like i said, we're not planning to have any in the near future.

TIA!

Re: average child care costs in central PA?

  • I would post this on the Central PA babies board. They would know. Most of the girls that had kids went over there. From what I've heard, it is around $200/week, but it depends on where you go.

  • I live in the lancaster area and we started at an in home child care provider and paid 4.50 an hour. We recently moved our daughter to a daycare facility and we pay a per hour rate based on their age.  Also the less hours they are there, the more you pay.  So it is usually better to have them there full time rather than part time.  We currently pay 4.30 an hour and it will go down when Natalie is 25 months...plus the center we use will also be her preschool as they go all the way up to they go to kindergarten.  Hope this helps!
  • When my daughter was in daycare last year we paid $660 a month for newborn up to a year. That is low compared to U-Gro which is about $230 a week. We opted to take her out of daycare all together and just have my mom watch her. Better for my emotions! :)

  • My DS goes to a certified in home day care and I pay $95.00 a week. It is lower than most. We are lucky because she is a family friend and we 100% trust her.
  • This is a good post to get some info from...a friend/neighbor of ours is due next month and she had commented a few months ago that the daycare that is literally in our development is expensive yet when she told me the price I thought it sounded reasonable compared to what I remember my SIL telling me she paid on the west shore.  I think she told me the one in our neighborhood was $175 (roughly) for the week.
