How many hours a day do you work???

Okay, my first poll!  And I'm sure I'm missing answers within this poll... but really interested in the feedback.

I've been working crazy long hours since I moved to NYC a year ago-- on average 12 hours a day.  With several nights over the past 3 months doing 14 hours.  which is so not fun.  I feel it's a NYC thing so really interested in people's feedback here in the comments too.  I realize that there are many other professions doing much longer hours (doctors, lawyers, etc. but still).  I needed to whine ;)  Thanks!!

Re: How many hours a day do you work???

  • I'm definitely not a typical NYC worker. For one, I work in Staten Island (totally not the same) and 2, I work part time. I work 3.75 hours a day. But when I was full time, I did 8...which I'm sure most girls here do, if not more.

  • Before the put a freeze on OT I would work an average of 9 hours in the office and the be availible by BB up to 2 hours after that if an emergency took off, now I am limited to 8 so I make sure that I stick to it. My last job I worked 12 regularly, depends on the industry but that was my average.
  • DH usually works 8:30-6, sometimes 6:30-7 and rarely takes lunch but he loves his job.

i worked longer hours when i cared about my job.?given that i haven't received my raise and work for some of the most useless and counter-productive people ever, i usually work 8 or less as i no longer feel the need to go the extra mile when it doesn't matter.?

  • I work from 8:30-5:30 but rarely take lunch and don't usually leave before 6:30.  It doesn't bother me too much because I know that I stopped dragging my a$$ and nesting during the day, I'd probably get out on time.

  • I work for a large non profit and for salaried folks like me we are supposed to work 7.25 hours. The .75 is for lunch. I just usually take a '1' for lunch. Stick out tongue But there are times that I work later or work during lunch too. But I rarely see 12 hour days...rarely!!

So true!  My old job at the firm was 10:30-5:30 (I know, what kind of lawyer has THAT schedule!?!).  Now at the law school, it is pretty much make your own hours, but I see myself putting in regular 8 hr days, not much longer.

  • Thanks Ladies!!  ... these answers pretty much confirm that I should look for a new job :)

  • I was recently promoted to being a manager of a library and don't put in more than 7 hours a day. We are unionized and library policy is that if we work more than 35 hours a week, we can accrue comp time, but no more than 5 additional hours per week. So essentially, I really can't work more than 40 hours a week even if I wanted to. I can't come in too early or stay too late either on most days because they want staff out of the buildings when the library isn't open. But I do check my e-mail even during off-days to try and stay on top of things.
