Old Pillows

What do you do with pillows you need to replace? Do you throw them out? Do you keep the filling to make other projects of sorts?

I was thinking of throwing them out, but then I thought maybe I can use the filling to make throw pillows instead of going out to buy filling.

We have about 4-6 pillows that need to be dealt with :)

Re: Old Pillows

  • I used to keep them, always intending to use them for something and never did. So now I throw them out, no sense them taking up space!
  • we donated ours to a goodwill shelter.
  • Once I saw the Oprah episode that showed how many bugs were in old pillows I started to just throw them out.

I heard this too...that's why I wasn't sure if washing them first help with the bug situation? I don't even want to know what's in the pillows!!

What they said on the show is that you would have to use scolding hot water and even then it isn't going to get rid of all of them. OMG it was the grossest episode ever.

  • OMG!

I kept some for spare rooms; and even mailed some over seas to the orphanages in Kabul... but will not be tossing them from now on! EWww!~
  • run them trough the wash and stash them in the linen closet. ?You never know when you need extra pillows.?

  • I read that animal shelters have use for them. Never tried to donate any, though. I'm pretty sure the dogs won't care about the pillow bugs, right?

  • I had used one for our puppy in her crate (when she was still using it) as a cushion with a blanket on top - it's still in there, even though she never goes in it!

Maybe I'll look into donating to the humane society here - otherwise, I think it's time for the trash. I need to replace the ones we have which is why I was wondering what others did with their old pillows.

Although we have allergen pillow covers over top of the pillow itself, I'm sure there are little buggers in there I don't want to know about!

  • Ours are washed and donated to goodwill... but now I hope that good will is throwing them out! I had no idea about the bugs... I literally just dropped like 6 pillows off on Monday in the bin.
